Found some beautiful meaty oxtails at Ideal Market yesterday for $3/lb. Got three pounds and after removing the bones had a little over two pounds to grind. Straight oxtail, nothing else. Best burgers I’ve had (that I cooked).

I was looking for a shoulder clod or anything with some fat for cheap. Glad I stumbled on the oxtails. Have a nice bone broth that been simmering overnight too.

I know. Cool story bro. Just saying there’s more to do with cheap meat than braising.

Tail meat is good meat. Never turned it into burger, but that would have to be good.

Last time I looked at oxtails was in Rouses when I was looking to make an old fashioned Vegetable Soup using oxtails as the meat. Damn things were pushing $7 a lb., so I passed and picked up a nice hunk of chuck roast to use instead.

I'll have to check out Ideal next time I'm in the mood for veg/beef soup.

Funny you say that. I looked online about making burgers with just oxtails. A lot of people cut it with sirloin but these weren’t all that fatty.

Bust most comments were “Why would anyone grind $7-8/lb meat?” Well because I found it at the Mexican market for $3.

An odd thing I found at Rouses was the spices. If you look in their "Spice" section where they have lots of choices, some of them are pretty $$$.

Then walk a few aisles over and head into the "Asian/Hispanic" section and things like Cumin, Chili Powder, Smoked Paprika, etc. are cheaper for the same size containers.

There's an Ideal market near me and I've only shopped it one time and they do have produce and meat products you will be hard pressed to find in a Rouses, Winn-Dixie, Albertsons, etc.

Oxtail is a criminally underrated piece of meat.

I would murder for some good Jamaican oxtail.

Oxtail is something I’ve always wanted to try to cook, but haven’t because every time I see it, it’s about $9-10/lb. Next time I’m in the vicinity of our local Mexican store, I’ll have to check in and see their price. Thanks.

Maybe I should check out our local Mexican grocery store again, I’ve never seen oxtail ground up in a store before.

I bought oxtails. Cut off the meat and ground it. Used the bones for bone broth. It wasn’t grind meat when I bought it.
