Last time I went they automatically added an 18% service fee that the manager said wasn't supposed to be a tip for the waitress. I was supposed to tip in addition to the 18% they added.

then what is the 18% for? If it isn't a mandatory tip, that would be a deal breaker for me as well. Judging by clientele, I would assume it is a mandatory tip.
Tekumi in Denham Springs had the same thing when I went in December. I assumed it was the tip. I didn't leave anything additional. Judging by the hibachi clientele, I assumed it was a mandatory tip.

Always had good food there, but I rarely recommend it. Absolutely nothing wrong with that restaurant.

The few times I have gone the food has been really good.

I’ve been to the Natchez location twice. The ribeye was very good both times. Not the best I’ve ever had but good enough for me to tell y’all how good it was.

I assumed the same thing. However, once they ran my credit card I noticed that they didn't show the 18% or say additional tip on tip line. It just had total and tip like every restaurant that doesn't automatically include gratuity for large parties.

I thought this was pretty shady so I asked the manager about it and he said the 18% service charge wasn't meant to be a tip and that I was supposed to tip my waitress in addition to the service charge. He thenproceeded to tell me this was normal in restaurant industry. I haven't been back since.

There is an unspoken truth here, their customer base had changed into one that is reluctant to tip at all, so they came up with this 18% charge scheme to rectify that. You are being caught up in that battle and rightly will not go back. So, by being dishonest with their customers, they made their problem worse.

If it isn't a tip, then what is it? If you need to add an 18% surcharge, why not just increase your menu prices?
That is a definite way to lose customers when they see this added fee that is unknown until you check out.
