My recipe...

-2 cherries, 1 orange slice muddle in an old fashioned glass
-Fill glass to top with ice
-Add 1 tsp simple syrup, 4-5 dashes bitters
-Pour whiskey over ice, give a slight stir

I serve them very similar. I muddle one cherry and a half orange slice, and pour a dash of simple syrup on top. Two dashes if they request sweet. I make sure to muddle the fruit very thoroughly. Fill with a blended whiskey or scotch of their choice, and put 2-3 solid dashes of bitters....Garnish with a cherry.....

I'm suprised nobody uses Peychauds bitters, straight from the N.O..

I only use Peychauds in sazeracs....maybe I should explore more uses for it

The bartender (Cliff) at Don's in downtown Laffy has been there for decades, and he finishes them off with a rock candy coated drink stir ftw.

I can see how that would be a nice touch. We've never had those at anywhere I've worked.

Damn, Cliff is still there? We used to go there for "Cliff's Drinks" and for an appetizer of "The Bouquet."

I'm a newbie to more fancy drinks, getting away from Bourbon and sprite haha. What is simple syrup and where can I get it?

Simple syrup is available in grocery stores around where the bloody mary mix, margarita mix, etc. are.

I am a big Ole Fashion fan (and Sazerac fan). I like trying variations of them too.

I use prefer rye whiskey to bourbon in most cases, but in no way do I dislike a bourbon Ole Fashioned.

One variation I have not seen is using triple sec instead of simple syrup.

I do like a splash of soda sometime, but anything more than a splash ruins it for me.

Simple syrup is just a mix of sugar and water, 1:1. Heat it up until the sugar dissolves then put it in the fridge.

- Muddle 2 sugar cubes, 1 half orange slice, 2 maraschino cherries, and 5-6 dashes of bitters in a high ball glass.
- Fill with ice
- Add 2 ounces Bourbon (I prefer Maker's for Old Fashioneds)
- Top off with a splash of club soda
- Garnish with another half orange slice and 1 more cherry

I tried this variation last night except I used simple syrup instead of sugar cubes and only 3-4 dashes of bitters. I think I prefer this drink with a splash of club soda. Definitely my new favorite drink.

Good to hear

As another poster said, definitely be careful with the club soda. Too big of a splash ruins it quickly.

I apologize for resurrecting such an old thread but I need some more advice about the Old Fashioned. What is y'alls favorite whiskey to use for this drink? I usually make mine with Maker's Mark but am looking to branch out a little. I'm planning on going to the store tonight to get more whiskey, what do y'all think? TIA

Bulleit Rye is my favorite, and I've had bars from Dominica to The Cove make them with it too. Got my last bottle from Calandro's but they don't have it all the time.
