Taking the wife there for her birthday, and the 20th anniversary of us dating, looking for a bit of advice. I see reservations are only for ~6, but we intend to go on Sat night at peak time...we don't mind waiting if wine is available...but reservations would be better.

Drive there? Parking available?

I assume the special board is key, I don't see her wanting much out of the canned selection, maybe scallops from France. Coq au Vin good? Just approach as a tapas meal...ordering a couple of things at a time...a few times?

If you can take an Uber/Lyft do so. That side of St Claude isn't the best if you aren't familiar with it. I can usually find parking on that side street, though.

The door is "hidden" with just a small N7 spraypainted in red I believe on the wooden gate door.

Its a really cool and pretty place. If the weather is nice you probably won't have a problem finding seats as people will be sitting both inside and outside.

Nice wine list imo, and yeah the coq au vin is pretty good. Don't be afraid to try one of the canned seafood things. They are actually pretty interesting and good. And yes, definitely approach it like tapas. the portions of each are generally very small.

One last question, do you think it will draw ire to order the cheese plate as an app?

Didn't know how stuffy the staff is. The only place we've ever had a condescending response was at Boulevard in San Francisco. We love interesting cheese plates, but just not as dessert. They clearly list it as such though.

I've been twice. Not pretentious at all. It's hipster like everywhere these days. First meal was EPIC, second meal was very good but not quite up to the first. Definitely get a few of the canned selections and a few of the other fresh choices too. Wine list eclectic and reasonable.

It's a very cool place and I wish I was going back.

Can't wait. Hopefully the chèvre with the cured salmon is aged, wondering how they prepare the Hamachi...man I hope it's interesting. May have to go at a sardines on my own.

Went last week with a large group. You can always email them just to see if they will take your reservation, can’t hurt to try. As for the canned items, we tried scallop rillettes, calamari and mackerel, and the scallop was the table’s favorite. We tried a lot of the menu and it was all really good. Did not get the chicken dish, because my friend liked the steak dish last time he was there and wanted it again. I’d pass on the steak au poivre, because it had mixed reviews among my friends. The sauce was a little sweet, which might be odd for one’s palette. The hamachi carpaccio was delicious, it was served with a very light yuzu sauce drizzled on the plate. Ordered a few specials and every dessert, the lemon tart and the eggplant special were standouts. Pass on the soy sauce creme brûlée. I’ve never had tempura escargot or purple yam soup before, so I will suggest getting that as well. It will be a very enjoyable meal and the ambience will be perfect for a date.

Cool place, very much an atmosphere driven place. Sort of like how Cafe Degas transports you to a chic little bistro in Paris; N7 does the same just to the south of France.

As far as showing up and waiting, Id say thats half the charm. While the restaurant is small, the grounds are very big. You should be able to snag a bottle of wine or a cocktail from the bar and have an enjoyable evening just waiting for your table. If the line is super long, you could always put your name on the list and head to St. Roch for oysters or Red's for some tiki drinks and fried rice.

Seating was limited due to rain so we sat at the bar. Started with Bok choy, scallop rillettes, and wagu titaki. Followed with hamachi carpaccio and tomato steak. Basil Haden's, Rose, 1664...

Very light meal. Ingredients forward. The Japanese fusion part really smarts up the French preparations. I'd love to try everything on the menu.
