Misleading title

The chart says that 52% of people prefer their burgers well done

That is the only category of beef where well done surpasses the 50% mark

Then again, there's probably a helluva lot more burgers consumed than steaks, no?

I would say sushi is one of those things that old people, particularly blue collar types don't like

Right...and then again, the overwhelming majority of burgers consumed are consumed at places that don't give you an option on how to order it.

So I'm not really sure consumption really matters all that much

And then again...it's ground beef...I'd say there is a big difference between liking your burger well done and a ribeye

This led me to think -- is this a situation where the wisdom of the crowds wins out over the more elitist attitude of the F&D board? What do they know that we don't know?

No. If you have to drown a steak in A1 or Heinz 57 just to infuse some flavor in it, you are doing it wrong. A lot of nice steakhouses won't even cook them well done.

Mmm mm mm nothing says "delicious" than a hamburger patty that's been sitting on a grill until it's nicely gray and dry. Or so believe 52% of Americans, as summarized by this beef industry research paper I discovered while googling something completely unrelated.
Safety wise there's a big difference between eating rare hamburger and rare steak. The potential for e-coli contamination is much greater with ground beef because of the way the beef is processed. Hence I tend to order hamburger well done.

I order steaks medium rare.

That's one of the many reasons why I like to buy grass fed, whenever possible.

I actually got a right wing chain email a couple years back that made fun of liberals for liking sushi and their steaks medium rare.

This. Eating rare/med rare commercially processed hamburger is risky. Grind your own if that's what you want. My steaks are rare...always. My burgers aren't...and won't be.

I like my steaks medium. Some pink on the inside without it raw/cold. I don't understand how people like raw meat that is barely seared, but at the same time eating a well done steak is nasty.

I like my burgers to be cooked more a little more than my steaks...ground beef can have e coli and whatnot.

Fuggin A. I'm not going to order a burger someone else has pattied cooked less than a medium. A steak is a different animal. Well not really, but...

The fact that an animal was grass fed doesn't have shite to do with the e coli risk associated with undercooked commercially made hamburger that may have come from the damn thing.

I like my chances of eating something less contaminated when it comes directly from the farmer.

It still has to go through a grinding machine that might be contaminated.

Fine. I'd like to see trustworthy statistics on the percentage of beef animals actually treated with growth harmones vs the perception created by the "grass fed" sales pitch. I'd also like for the grass fed beef to be tested indepndently for chemical contamination arising from the consumption of grass. Ain't all forage chemical free, you know. I'm not picking a fght...just pointing out that there is one helluva sales pitch going on here.

Believe me, I do not fall for sales pitches easily. I detest them. It just makes sense for me to go for the cattle that eats what it naturally wants to eat.

Brock, I grew up in the business. If the steer is in a nice pasture, and I pour 15 lbs of good cracked corn in a trough 200 yds from him, he'll break into a run...accross all that good grass...to get to that corn every friggin' time. Belive me...cattle want grain...just a question of whether they get it.
