Just ate at BBQ Shop. Pulled pork was dry and chunks were much too big. Had to soak it in sauce to eat my sandwich. I eat much better at Dickie's regularly. Potato salad didn't have eggs or onions in it. Was slices of potato, not cubes. Very underwhelming. Baked beans were no joke from a can.

BBQ spaghetti was just gross

I will not eat there again next time I come to town. Did Hogs spoil me? Maybe, but these brick and mortar places should be on point

Central is probably my favorite. The BBQ shop did not impress me.
Hammertime, let me know when you back in town, maybe we can grab a beer.

If you are simply looking a BBQ close to Beale then I would say hit Rendezvous, get some overly dry ribs and the sausage platter and then leave for real food later. Everyone should try it but far from the best BBQ. My 2 favorite places are central and commissary.

For fried chicken I can't recommend the dipped chicken at Uncle Lou's enough. Don't get me wrong, Gus's produces some great chicken. But I grew up with a large southern grandma who could crank out some fabulous fried chicken so Gus's didn't change my life. I will drive by that place to get to Uncle Lou's. I'm not a big guy but I can put down a 10 piece mixed and then want some more to go. Skip the sides, eat more chicken and then get the strawberry shortcake.

If you want something decidedly different try Hog and Hominy, after Lou's it is my favorite place to eat in the city. Good drinks and a bunch of small plates that are great for sharing with a big group.

A good bit of commercial BBQ is overrated, not just Memphis.

I went to Memphis about 6 weeks ago and tried a few of the places listed. Central was solid but definitely not better than the best places in New Orleans (not saying too much). Gus' fried chicken was really good, but not the best I've ever had. I really enjoyed Hog & Hominy which is about 20 minutes from downtown.

Gus' is amazing. My favorite place in Memphis. My understanding is that the Memphis location is the only one that still serves the fried rice, which is one of the nominees for GOAT side at a fried chicken place.

If you want something fancier, Flight is an awesome experience. Gus' and Flight are two musts when visiting Memphis.
