Since it is a kids party I am open to suggestions other than Ambrosia since I know that will be first to be mentioned.

Does Rouses do a decent run of the mill birthday cake? Or should I go elsewhere and if so where?

Yes, and slightly above average.

I had a 2 layer chocolate sheet cake from Costco last week. It was good. $19 served 40.

Don’t know where you live, but I always thought Dorignac’s in Metairie made a good one.

You can easily bake your own chocolate cake. I'm not talking box stuff. It's pretty easy, actually.

This........a lot of people are scared of baking cakes from scratch, but Chocolate cake is pretty simple. No fancy equipment required, just hand mixing basic ingredients. Lots of simple recipes on you tube.
