Local Foods Houston. Tomatoes or no tomatoes in gumbo? How about red beans?

My wife wanted Local Foods last night so we run up there to grab a quick bite. I glance at the menu, saw they had gumbo and thought to myself what the hell most of their food is pretty good, I will give it a shot. They served me red beans and rice with shrimp and crab meat in it . I thought it had to be a mistake so I went and looked at the menu in more detail sure enough it had beans in the description. I wish I had taken a picture of the dish itself but I only grabbed a picture of the menu. Has anyone ever seen this? And how can you call it gumbo if it has beans in it?

After looking at their social media, looks like they kind of go loose with various dishes in terms of being traditional. I don't mind it. Their food does look good.

It was an odd dish. Some bites I would get a hint of gumbo and other bites it tasted like straight up red beans.

Yea for their specials (which that probably was) they do some interesting things. They had a "queso" made of chick peas that was actually pretty damn good.

Crunchy chicken sandwich and bahn mi are the best things on the menu.

Props to trying to do something different, but that sounds terrible. Creativity is good, but ambitious creativity can be a downfall.

I hear ya. I could see us ordering it after reading the description just to see what it looks like, and probably laugh at it. Dunno if I found what you had, but these pics of their gumbo look good imo. The second does look like a red bean mixture of some sorts
