Either is fine with me as long as it's gin.

All good as long as the bottle of vermouth remains unopened

My martini preference:
- swirl splash of dry vermouth around ice cold martini glass, discard
- mix gin + olive juice with ice by stirring
- strain into glass
- garnish with 2 blue cheese stuffed olives

Didn't know he was banned. Nobody has been around so long and gotten away with so much. He really is a garbage pile.

That isnt a martini. Its gin and olive juice in a vermouth rinsed glass.
I like a 3:1 or 4:1 gin to vermouth mix. Into a mixing glass, lots of ice, stir for 50 rotations (no more, no less), strain into a chilled glass. Lemon peel spritzed over top and dropped in glass. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
I know its "cool" to say "Gin with a whisper of there being a bottle of vermouth on the bar", but you really need the sweet, herbal deliciousness of vermouth to do justice to this most classic cocktail.

I don't really think being "cool" has anything to do with it. Some people (as evidenced in this thread) don't even like the idea of a splash of vermouth, let alone mixing a cocktail 3:1 with it. I can do a 3:1 or 4:1 mix if the vermouth is really solid, but most times I'd rather a hint of it in the backdrop rather than it being too powerful.

You see the vermouth as the power in that race car?
Interesting. Not saying it is incorrect, but I always imagine the vermouth as what tames the power, the brakes and power steering if you will. I like a Dolin dry vermouth and a good gin. I like the way it tones down the sharpness of the alcohol and can push to the front botanicals, citrus, and floral flavors. I like to eat a few olives or potato chips for the salt component, maybe some boiled peanuts if I am lucky. I prefer to have one as close to sunset as possible.
Although I will say that two olives over which two martinis have been poured is a pretty fantastic meal. I like to put my olives in the freezer. Try it.

I like a little bit of floral flavor but too much and it ruins the drink for me.

Thanks for the tip I'll try it out next time.

I'm not going to "snob" (by that I mean be precise with a definition) and say that one or the other disqualifies something from being a martini, but I'm with BO on this one. If the vermouth is even halfway decent I want it to be present as I find that it enhances the overall flavor. Certainly that's subjective, but we like what we like. And obviously it's a delicate balance -- if the vermouth is too present that is equally problematic.

Hear, hear.
There are martini variants, just as there are old fashion, mojito, negroni, etc... variants. But a martini is, and has been for most of documented cocktail history, a very specific drink of two ingredients in certain proportions (in fact original martini was probably 50/50) with select garnishes (say a dash of bitters, olives, or lemon).

True. I'd rather have straight gin than too much vermouth though. But I love gin.
