Old fashioned's are my go-to when I go to a decent bar or restaurant but I've never tried to make them at home. I've decided to change that.

What bitters do the FDB recommend?

On the fly, orange bitters and angostura bitters.

Traditional old fashioned won't use orange bitters, but will use an orange peel.

Only Angostura bitters for me. It's the classic recipe and anything else starts to mask the bourbon too much for my liking.

The ang bitters are required, but I like the idea of orange as well. I may try this out.

To add more bourbon flavor, you can try the Woodford Reserve bitters. I but one splash of this to accompany my 6 or so splashes of ang. It's good stuff

I'm hooked on Fee Brothers cherry bitters....A few shakes in sparkling water, or in lemonade, etc. Havent used in a cocktail yet, tho.

Peychauds is my standard. Wife gave me some cardamom bitters recently and I enjoyed it as well

Old fashioneds should use angostura or a similar aromatic bitters from any of the other companies (Fee, Bittermans, bitter truth, etc)...a Sazerac should only ever be Peychauds.

I've used some Molé bitters before to make a twist on it with an anejo tequila base, Amber agave nectar, and flamed orange peel.
