I need a good sharpening on my kitchen knives (globals). It could be anywhere on the northshore.

There's a company where you can mail them off, but it takes like a week to get them back. It's like $60 for 4 knives I think.

I don't want to do it myself.

There’s a mail service called Knife Aid. I sent my Henkels in a few months ago and I was very pleased with the work and the simplicity of the transaction.

I did a four knife package and I think it was $49 including shipping. You sign up on line and they send you a kit with sheaths and a return pouch. I sent mine off and had them back inside of a week. I was shocked how fast I got them back.

Have you not tried to do this yourself? It really isn't hard to sharpen knives with just a couple good stones that will more than pay for themselves in no time at all. Plus you don't have to do without the knives doing it yourself.

There's tons of tutorials on u-tube on sharpening things from giant sawmill blades to pocket knives.

Just a thought.

With the equipment they have, it only takes about 2-3 minutes per knife to sharpen.

I've used Knife Aid twice now and have been very pleased. If you're investing in an decent knife set you should definitely get them professionally sharpened at least once a year depending on use.

This place in New Orleans sharpens my Japanese Knives. They also have a great selection of knives to purchase. Can't speak for North Shore, but would like an option there as well.

Seeing those prices for single knives has me believing some people have more money than sense.

Chef's knives going for $400-$600 each is just not my style. I've got better things to spend that kind of money on.

Well they're for chefs ya know. If you made a living with your knives you'd probably have the best you can afford. It just so happens that people who like to cook may want to splurge and buy a super nice knife.

Or just be dumb. Trying to impress people.

I've got a 20 dollar 8" chef knife that slices paper easily. Bought a Japanese Wet Stone and watched a U-tube video on how to use it. My wife won't even stick her hand in my knife drawer anymore.

Pretty much how is see home cooks buying these type knives. I can understand a professional chef wanting a fine knife since it is a tool he uses all day long.

I've bought and been gifted some chef's knives over the years by folks that know I love to cook.

The last one I got as a gift is a basic 8 inch Dexter with the textured white handle for a good grip. I've had that one for a few years now and it has served me well and is easy to keep an edge on it.

I have several different grit stones and even have a very fine diamond plate sharpener I use for the final pass before going to my Irish Linen and leather strop. I use this method for all my bladed tools including knives, straight razors, chisels and plane blades to get them razor sharp.

There’s a place on highway 190 in Covington called Alpine that will sharpen your knives for you too. They are located near where the Lowes and Walmart are.

It's worth it if you're into it. Why a buy a porsche if you can buy a used toyota for a fraction of the price and still get where you're going?

I bet you really impress your guests when you pull up YouTube on your phone and beginning sharpening your $20 chef knife before making them dinner. Do you do a paper cutting demo?

This is like the OT line of thinking - why buy a Lexus when you can buy a Toyota? Rolex!?! I got an iPhone that tells time!!

As if superior steel, craftsmanship, balance etc does not exist in the knife making world
