Im thinking in the refrigerator is my best bet. Should I just keep them in the paper bags with little room to move? Never had any luck keeping them alive in ice chest on ice.
What if a few are dead after 24 hours when I go to cook them? Ok to cook or do they start going back immediately upon death.
Thanks

They should keep like that and once they get chilled, they won't be moving at all. It won't kill them, but they'll go dormant until the warm up again.

Keep refrigerated and bagged. You should be okay.

I have no experience with this, but it is a good thing you ask this question here rather than the OT.

But not a plastic bag, because they will suffocate. You can ice them in an ice chest also

Your plan should be fine.

We keep them in an old fridge at the camp for up to 3 days before we cook and they stay alive. We put a wet towel on top of the hamper. The fridge is old. Probably runs about 38-42 degrees.

If some die you will be fine. Especially less than 24 hours.

The crabs will appear dead when you take them out because they are cold as hell. They will start to liven up when they warm up.
