Either you caught it on a bad day or you don’t eat with a trained tongue.

The gas station location is legit.

Everyone says KC sauce is thick and sweet, wrong, each place has its unique own sauce, I think Arthur’s, original is the best anywhere. Texas sauce is amazingly all the same exact sauce thin Worcester based. I’m from KC although I moved over 25 years ago . I know q and did several American Royals placing in the top ten ain several categories.:Do some research on the places before you judge them, You know why they serve their meat on cheap white bread slices? because they don’t want you to taste it , it’s there just to hold the meat.
Here is another great place,,Sneeds in Belton Mo. first place I knew of served Burt ends, they were called brownies on the menus.

It’s not bad, but if it is the best KC BBQ, then they need to stop bragging. Texas BBQ is where it’s at. It used to just be a Central Texas thing, but both Dallas/FW area and Houston have great BBQ now too.

Joe's for ribs
SLAPS for burnt ends
Q39 for pork belly
Arthur Bryant's for the experience

Scott’s Kitchen right by the airport is a hidden gem and solid, some of the best BBQ I’ve had in KC, certainly better than Q39. Very convenient to stop by and grab on the way to or from the airport. Their BBQ tacos are fire.

With that said, the best BBQ I had there was from Jack Stack BBQ. Go to the Freight House location.

The freight house part is important, there are 3-4 locations and freight house is/was the best.

Also consider KC Joes, I prefer the "smokey joe" sandwich.

KC definitely loves Joes. I was on a business trip to KC, my host recommended Joes as representative BBQ. I pulled up about 11:15, the parking lot was already packed with people parked on the grass, any which way they could get their cars in. I said frick all that, I have a plane to catch. So I never got to try it, but I am a witness to how popular it is among the locals. Cop cars, plumbing vans, mercedes, etc. All walks of life. This was the "gas station" location.

Joe's Kansas City Shamrock location is the one I went to. The burnt ends are money.

If you go to Bryant's try the sliced pork and fries. Nobody else does sliced pork and it is awesome at Bryant's. When I smoke a butt I slice it more often that I pull it because of Bryant's. LC's has the best burnt ends in my opinion, and their beans are my favorite of the local places. I like the pulled pork and ribs from Joe's KC. The Z-man sandwich with pulled pork is my go-to there. Gates has the best weekday lunch special in town, called the nooner. It's a good sized bbq sandwich and fries for like $8. They also have very good ribs. Jack Stack is more of an upscale place that does everything well. They are the most consistent in my opinion. Slap's BBQ and Q39 are both very good as well. I hope you have a good visit and get some good BBQ.

Edit: I forgot about Scott's Kitchen. It is very good, but they have weird hours so I kind of forget about them. They are by the airport though, so that could be convenient for you depending on when you fly in or out.
