For the money nothing beats Gentleman Jack, but others to try would include Blantons, Woodford Reserve, Basil Haydens, 1792, and Jeffersons Reserve.

If you really wanna step uo to the plate and spend some coins, Pappy Van Winkle is the cream of the crop.

Famous Grouse by a large margin in Scotland.

LINK

Worldwide is Ballantines and Walker...

I've had the occasion to meet and work with a few Scots and most will tell you the single malt phenomenon is a distinctly American thing that has poured over to Asia and Europe.

I've tried singles from every region and don't mind some, others are just plain nasty.

The Scots are also notoriously cheap which could explain why they're not shelling out the dough for single malts

Just thought the bandaide iodine remark didnt really represent the area as a whole.

In the end you like what you like. There are fantastic blends out there.

Anyway, what should my next bottle be?

You're on the right track with sampling different whiskeys and seeing what you like. One of the best things to do is go to a nice bar with a good whiskey selection (preferably with tasting glasses) and ask them to either set up a flight of different ones (just small amount of each to taste) or start trying them one glass at a time. This will help you hone in on what tastes you like and what you don't. It'll also help you not spend decent money on an entire bottle of something you may not like.

With that said, here's some bourbons that I like a lot:

Great value, but things most can afford ($20-$30): Eagle Rare 10 year, Elmer T Lee, Buffalo Trace

$40-$50 Range: Blanton's, Rock Hill Farm, Jefferson Reserve, Elijah Craig 18 year, Basil Hayden's, 4 Roses Single Barrel

I've been busy. I'm on general wards which are always crazy with admitting and discharging patients all the time and being on call. I'm also helping plan my wedding, getting ready to apply for fellowship, etc, etc. (i.e. I've been drinking the whiskey too fast to appreciate many flavors as of late )

If the OP is in BR, the cove is set up well for this as far as selection goes. Very large whisky list and they have tasting glasses. They have tastings from time to time as well.

If that is what you are doing you will appreciate this little bitch comment from a residents wife about her life. She was complaining about her husbands hours and the raising of two children by herself while that occurred. I chuckled as both of my parents did thier interns and residencies while raising thier first child(delivered during her senior year) as that was what they had to do.

There are a ton of misconceptions about residency and the demands. My generation definitely has it a little better than our predecessors but we still work 80 hour work weeks and can be on call (28 hour shift) every 3rd night so still no walk in the park. Luckily my fiancee is very understanding of the demands and craziness.

true, but I prefer a single to drink neat, blend with a splash of water

singles have more flavor.

but I simply can't get enjoyment from choking down a drink that tastes like a bandaid soaked in iodine tincture(Laphroaig).

stop drinking Islay Scotches then. That's your problem.
