Well they are closing regardless... but if someone buys out the Chelsea's name it will only be temporary.

so hire a GM and let them deal with the bullshite. If it was making cash, he'd keep it or he would have it sold already.

Bummer. I used to eat at the State street location too much when I lived over there, and frequented the new location. I did notice when I was in town last week that the bar side was closed. So it goes. Guess I'll stop in at Christmas and get one last meal.

I don't know where you people get this idea. Are you saying that people never get out of any business that makes money? Because that is silly.

Very few bar owners are dealing with the day to day grind of their establishments. They have managers for that. Why is that hard to understand? The place isn't making money for him anymore (or won't under the new lease) so he's getting out.

I know two bar owners in town. Once they reached a certain age and started collecting kids, they hired GMs. They didn't sell because the establishments were making them money.

You base this off of a sample size of 2.

Lots of owners sell profitable businesses. In fact, lots of people are in business solely to buy a business, make it profitable, then sell it.

They are worth more when they are turnkey with positive cashflow, thus they generally use the profit from the sale to go make even more money. It's a helluva way to start amassing big piles of cashola.

I find this hard to believe.

Its not hard to understand but when you hire someone to run your business(someone that probably doesnt have any money invested in the place and no allegiance to you), odds are it is not going to be run to the fullest of its potential.

You know this for fact?

Oh well that settles it.

I drink regularly at a bar in town where the owner is about as active in the day to day stuff as you can be.

I was/is a regular at another very popular bar in town where the owners arent in there every day like the other place. If anything, they seemed to pop in every few weeks. This popular place has gone through its share of GMs. The place makes a ton of money as is so everything probably appears on the up and up but theyve had GMs in there hiring unqualified people because they had tits and arse, giving away ridiculous amounts of liquor/beer, and generally not giving a shite. That stuff doesnt happen when an owner is there.

Not saying you cant hire a GM and be successful. Plenty of places can afford to hire a guy and take the losses that come with having them there instead of the owner.

Adds nothing to your point. Why would he have sold it if he was not ready to sell it?

That sucks. I remember going to the State St. location my freshman year.

I saw Ryan Bingham play a show at the overpass location and then he won an Oscar about 2 weeks later.
