One of my favorite tropical fruits. This one i bought from the Asian grocery store. It was 99 cents a pound and with the current food inflation, I can't say no to that.

This one is about 15 pounds.

They do sell smaller cut up pieces(just like watermelons) but they will charge around $5 a pound for it. But sometimes they cut it when it's not fully ripened. This one was unripened. I left it on the counter a couple days. When it's time, the Jackfruit will have some give when pressed against it. Also, the smell will be similar to juicy fruit gum except it will have natural fragance vs a synthetic flavor.

This is how it looks when I cut it open length wise.

If you're doing this, you should wear latex gloves. It will get sticky. The white center core is not edible and needs to be removed.

So after quartering length wise and removing the core, it looks like this.

You can see the individual bulbs. Some stores will sell you the bulbs in a small Styrofoam tray. But it'll be around $6-7 a pound. And they usually don't remove the seeds.

After removing the bulbs and seeds, this is the final product.

This one yielded around 5 pounds. They are sweet, tender, fragrant, and full of nutrients. I've been finishing up my meals with them as a healthy dessert. They store pretty well in the fridge but I do put them in zip lock bags and into the freezer they go. Also, not many people know this but the seeds are edible. If you boil the seeds for an hour(add some salt), they will tasted like a cross between boiled potatoes and boiled peanuts.

I see jackfruit at the Asian grocery store but never have ventured to try it, mainly because they are gigantic. What does it taste like? Anything similar?

Thanks for sharing. I may have to try this now.

I like that you have a candle burning in the second pic. Once you get it past your nose that shite is delicious.

They do sell it in smaller cut up portions or ready to eat. I would try that first to see if you like it before going all in on a whole one. The texture can be similar to a tender zucchini or a mid ripen mango. Sweet. Flavor is similar to juicy fruit but better.

I think I was cooking a steak before and that was a reason for the candle. I don't mind the jackfruit smell.

Maybe he's thinking of Durian, which looks like jackfruit (but smaller) and is known for its smell?

Thanks for the tip. I'll probably do that.

Jackfruit is delicious and tastes like bubble gum. Unfortunately it’s pretty worthless nutrition wise.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s really really good. If you’ve never smelled it before though it’s intimidating

Maybe. Durian is a very polarizing fruit. Either you love it or you hate it.

I buy young, unripened, already cubed in a can which doesn't have a smell for about $3. The young jackfruit makes a great meat substitute. Pulled pork sandwiches are great using jackfruit, I smoke it for 30 minutes or so. I also use it in tacos, enchiladas and fry it for "chicken" burgers.

Smoked some yesterday for pulled jackfruit sandwiches this weekend

How is that wrong? I like it, and it is a flexible item, but for a meat substitute it has no and I mean no protein. I don’t think it’s particularly high in anything.

Looks like it has pretty good nutrients and is high in protein for a fruit

quote:

What makes jackfruit unique from other fruits is its protein content. It provides more than 3 grams of protein per cup, compared to 0–1 grams in other similar types of fruit, such as apples and mangoes

ah the great FDB jackfruit protein debate

I just typed in "jackfruit protein" and some of the first links to come up

https://foodinsight.org/should-we-actually-tell-the-jackfruit-to-hit-the-road/

" One serving of jackfruit contains just 2.84 g of protein. That is a mere 6 percent of your DV. While you might be getting a texture similar to meat, you aren’t getting a nutritional equivalent when it comes to protein."

https://coronavirus.providence.org/blog/uf/609129720

quote:

While jackfruit has a lot of benefits - it’s low calorie and high in vitamins and fiber - it is not very high in protein, so it’s recommended you include an extra protein source in your meals.

It’s a fruit so the protein won’t be there. But there’s plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s like you would never eat steak for the dietary fiber or vitamin A.

Had a jackfruit curry that was great at Himalaya's.
It was tomato based and I remember them stating it was a Punjab style dish.

Jackfruit is good stuff. With that said, I did want to point out for the mathematically deficient among us who might find your process a bit intimidating: You paid roughly $3/lbs for the fruit you ended up with, which isn't a terribly far cry from the $5/lbs to get it already processed. But I definitely hear you on the ripeness issue. That's always my concern when I buy fruit already chopped.

This is a neat post, interesting to see it harvested. I both heard of and tried jackfruit at curry and kabob. It was meat-ish and while I wouldn't ever be able to entirely replace meat with it I could see it working in some dishes. It was good in curry. That was the only time I've eaten it, so I've never had it sweet.

Durian is wild. Incredibly unique fruit from the smell, taste and texture. Had a coworker from Malaysia bring some in to the office, stank up the whole place.

I marinate it for a few hours in a 1 part bbq sauce to 4 parts water solution, dump all that with the jackfruit into a cast iron skillet and bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes, put the skillet in the smoker at about 200 or just in the grill over charcoals and let it go until all the liquid is gone, put in oven on 450 and cook until you get a little bit of char on the ends. Manger!
