Back in the 80’s, my dad would send me to Giamonica’s (spl) on Government to get a dozen or so Italian desserts for him and the guys while they played cards. They had a display counter at the front of the restaurant with more desserts than you could shake a stick at.

Is there any places still like this in BR? I know Le’Madeleine’s has a nice selection of French pastries and desserts, but nothing as good as those Italian desserts.

Close, but we’re not Italian, and it was a bunch of guys playing Hearts, instead of poker.

Your best bet is driving to Brocato's. You aren't going to find anything even remotely similar in BR.

Nah, that card game wasn't at Giamancos..although a few of their bartenders were smalltime bookies.

That card game was at Phil's Oyster Bar sideroom in 1980s and 1990s, The original Village backroom in 1960s and 1970s, Bellemont in 1950s.

Anthony's carries a solid Tiramisu from NYC, and the Almond Cake that Lawrence gets from some lady in Mandeville/Northshore at Gino's is really tasty. Pokey carries Cannoli(maybe Angelo Brocatos?)

BR is lean pickins!
