I’ve never had it and it’s time I did

What is a good starting point at a reasonable price?

Fladgate 10yr is perfect if you just want to see what it is about.

Places with multiple ports on the menu will usually have a Fladgate of some level.

Costco has a port as well, alright, but not enough body it seems.

Keep in mind that port is a sipper, not a drinker. It's super rich and sweet, so make sure you're going into this with the right expectations.

I've started to get it after meals with dessert and it's really enjoyable.

(Not so subtle brag: I also just booked a trip to the Douro Valley. So i'll have a lot more to add to this convo in a few months.)

There are funny “rules” with port like always pass the bottle with your right hand so you cannot access your sword. Once the bottle is opened, it must be consumed in full. Obviously, this is very old historical, but interesting nevertheless.

I’ve enjoyed vintage port. Warres specifically. 1980 vintage is like chocolate velvet. I decant it and let it breathe all day and sip it with Stilton. This is a rare but very memorable experience. When done correctly with the right people, expect to hear the best stories.

It's the most dignified accompaniment to dessert, particularly after a steak dinner. I feel like Genghis Khan and Ricardo Montelbon when I order it.

It’s my understanding (from salesman I know at Martin’s)

Low priced ports are horrible

A good port is a real treat.

Thanks for the responses!
I often have a finger of bourbon or good rum after supper but thought a port might be a nice change.
