Went today to check out the lunch items at the prepared food counter. The offerings are great and the portions are very generous.
I got the shredded beef, like ropa vieja, comes with choice of two different rices, black beans or salad and plantains or yucca. Got yellow rice, black beans and plantains. Got the beef soup for my assistant to try and it is excellent. Full of carrots, potatoes, cabbage and yucca. Comes with white rice and two Central American style tortillas.
This will be in the weekly rotation for sure. The rest of the market is clean and bright. Produce looked great and so did everything else. Employees were nice and friendly.

Ideal often has great prices on avocados...4/$1 for small ones, last time I looked.

Is it still crowded?
Got there around 11:30 and only one person was at the counter. Rest of the market was not too crowded. Plenty of parking available.

Do you have to be Mexican or can anyone just walk in?

Good one. The hot food section was great. Braised goat, braised pork legs and the best looking whole grilled chickens I have ever seen at a store. Butterflied and grilled.

I'm sure it is. I can't wait to try everything. I love Central American/Latin food so much. Like I said, once a week at a minimum.

Place has been heavy in my rotation the last month. I've had lunch from there twice already this week, picked up mixed beef fajitas from the meat department for dinner Monday night, had breakfast from there this morning, and stopped by on my way home from work today to get the beef fajita steaks from the meat department. I'll cook that tomorrow.
Place gets packed during peak hours. The morning is not bad, but around lunch time and from 5-6 pm it can be a PITA. That intersection doesn't help either. Lots a rude patrons at those times. They have done a good job in the last couple weeks labeling things in English, especially in the out food section.
My go to lunch plate is the pink grilled chicken, yellow rice, pico, and plantains. At $10 I put it up there with some of the best lunch deals in town.
Can't wait for the one in Kenner brah to open. I'm sad to see Celina's go but this will be an upgrade.
