It now has rust on it. What is the best way to restore it? Should I just go buy another one?

Fire it, scour it, season it.

Lather the entire skillet in lard and burn the hell out of it in an open fire or in bbq pit. It’ll be fine.

You didn’t hurt it.

If it’s surface rust, clean it with white vinegar to remove the rust. You can even soak it in the vinegar if it’s bad. Rinse it with soap and water, then just water. Heat it to warm and get it dry. While warm apply a very thin coat of oil (canola or grape seed). Bake at 450 for an hour, turn off oven and leave in oven until cool. You may have to repeat these last steps several times. Now cook cornbread/fry bacon and you’ll be back in business.

Wire cup brush inserted into a drill will knock off the rust. Or you could use some elbow grease and a Scotch Brite pad

I recommend sending it to me and buying another one. That is by far the best way for me to get another piece of CI.

No?

Then scour it with steel wool and coat lightly with oil. Wipe and put in the oven at 400 f (upside down so no oil collects on the bottom) and heat it for 30 minutes. Remove, wipe dry with paper towel and do it again 3 or 4 times. It will get better each time. Alternately, fry something in it several times.

However, my first suggestion seems best to me. After a while you might just forget ever having it, but I would remain forever grateful.

Make a baking soda paste and scrub with water.

Then, tallow/lard + coarse salt scrub.

Scrape all salt/fat off, then wipe with old rag and bake at 250 for 45 min.
