I don't believe that. we went out three times this weekend and more than half the party each time ordered water on the side. didn't notice if they charged for any of it though.

ordering water is not cheap.

List all the restaurants you go to that charge for a glass of water.

it was the norm to have a glass of water at the table when you sat down...now in many places you have to ask...what is with that?

So you don't review your bill before paying?

I usually know what I ordered and figure the bill to be close. say I guess 60 and the bill is 65, close enough for me. however, often I hand the waiter the card before I see the bill.

If I figure the meal was 60 and it comes back @ 80 then yeah I review it closer.

Water (or the expectation that X % will order water) should be built into the price of goods and services. IMO, it's bad PR to charge for water because if nothing else people will feel screwed and not come back.

so everyone has to pay for the people ordering water? why not factor in the price of cokes, or one beer per patron so that we all get free drinks?

I do get the perception that water is free, but this seems to be a sticking issue that people don't think they should be charged for goods provided.

Go to McDonalds next time they are more than willing to accommodate cheap diners.

It's not about being cheap, it's about violating a very well established pricing practice. If I'm at a high end restaurant I can see it, but if I'm somewhere that's more middle of the road, I'd wonder why they are charging me when 99.9% of their competitors don't.

They're being charged, it's just typically built in to the price of the meal like the table, chairs, utensils, rent, insurance, etc. No one's trying to get a free glass of water here, they just want restaurants to offer it at a competitive price, included with the meal.

didn't coke have water fountains on the side of their vending machines at one time?

go to their competitors then, honestly that $2 isn't going to keep you from frequenting their establishment and they know it. like Southwest charging for peanuts, they know you are there for something else and this is just a little way to make up some costs.

So I should pay 2.25 for my iced tea instead of 2.00 to make up for you getting a glass of water? that sort of seems like welfare, huh?

You are missing the point. Restaurants don't charge for a glass of water on the bill, just as they don't charge for the utensils on the bill. Sure it's a cost to them, but it's not a line item on the bill.

If they list water as "drink" on the bill, it is likely an error.

WTF we are not talking about something even remotely the price of a fountain drink here. Like I said earlier this is the SAME shite that is washing everyone's dishes. If you order 5 items and I order 2 with a glass of water I garantee the restaurant is paying more in tap water fees ON YOU than me.

You dont think restaurants figure the cost in their food to make up for the people that get 5 refills of Coke as well?

sometimes, guess it could depend on their contract with coke. my point was being if you factor into food prices for one customer to have free drinks why not factor in for all customers, regardless of what they are drinking.

are you paying the same price on the two that I am the five? the tap water being used to manufacture the product are factored in, that isn't what is in question.

how much was the charge for the water?

so was it a mistake on her part, or did the restaurant really had a charge for the water?

im pretty sure for most restaurants they dont make the same profit margin on each menu item. at the very least for drinks it's way more than for food....but usually this also is the case within a menu of food items.

Wow this topic got way crazier than I thought, I still do not expect to be charged for a glass of ice water, yes i realize that the resturant does incur a very small charge for that glass just like they incur a charge everytime I flush the toliet but I do not expect to be charged for that either. I am wondering of the people arguing the opposite if they are waiters? owners? or just patrons?
