Anyone know what is up with LA Homebrew here in BR? Past few times most of the ingredients I need are out of stock and I have to frankenstein a beer together.

I'm guessing Agile is taking up a lot of resources and that the homebrew market isn't what it once was 10 years ago.

I'm about to go back to Austin Homebrew to order my ingredients like I did back in the ole days.

I've had the same issues. I've heard that people don't brew as much in the winter time, so this could be a seasonal thing, but i've never really had this problem in the past.

I've been having to do that, lately. LA Homebrew will mill your grains for you, if you buy whatever you can from them. It sucks though, because i have to plan at least a week or so out to make sure everything comes in, in time.

I am able to get some grains i've been willing to try, that LA hasn't had. I made a Helles with Weyermann Barke Pilsner and excited to see how that comes out.

Sad news today, LA Homebrew is officially closing it's doors Saturday.

quote:

LA Homebrew will be closing permanently Sat Feb 25th. It's been a great 10 years and we have made wonderful friends with some incredible brewers, wine makers, distillers and mead makers. We like to think that we are leaving the brewing community in a better place than when we started. This post C0vid economy has been debilitating to our retail shop with astronomical shipping charges, increased wholesale prices, decreased product availability and years of shrinking local brewing activity. We have reached a point of no return and thus we will be closing.
All remaining inventory will now be sold at 50% off. Stock up before this Saturday.
We are planning to serve our last festival beers Sat March 4th at the Zapp's Beerfest. Cheers to the past 10 years!

Everything i order from "Austin Homebrew" comes from Minnesota aka Northern Brewer. They were bought out by them a few years back if i recall.

Damn this sucks. A PITA to get CO2 from anyone but then. The pawn shop in denham sells CO2 but they are pretty out of the way.

So other than Austin brew supply/northern brewer, any other recommended grain suppliers? How's price compared to what lahomebrew was?

There is a fire extinguisher supply place (Louisiana Fire Extinguisher) somewhere in BR. i'm gonna have to find it or some other option to refill my CO2.

Brewstock in New Orleans is where i used to get my stuff before LA Homebrew. You can try morebeer too. The problem with the macro homebrew suppliers is you can't order grains in oz. increments. Has to be by the pound.

Price wise, i don't think they are too drastically different. Pricing might be a little better because the macro suppliers get more of everything, but that's probaly offset by shipping.

I just made my last order. Got about $100 worth of stuff @ 50% off. Need to find a grain mill now, and start milling myself.

LA Homebrew will be sorely missed by me, but I understand why they have to close at the same time. Guessing Agile will be expanding into that space.

Well this sucks... Thankfully I work right next to a CO2 supplier, but I'm screwed for grains. I don't have space to buy bulk grains and I certainly don't feel like milling them myself

My LHBS closed about 2 years ago and Ive ordered from the various online places and lately have been using Morebeer; shipping is free for orders over $59. I bought a Cereal Killer Grain Mill 5 or 6 years ago and its been a great investment. I can order unmilled grains and not have to use them immediately. Milling 20lbs takes all of 20 minutes and I usually do that while my mash water is heating. Given that it was a 30 minute drive to my LHBS, ordering online is much more convenient. It was nice being able to ask the guys at the store a question here or there, but there is so much info online now I don't miss their knowledge.

Nice, I haven't located the LHBS around here, but I just upgraded some equipment to motivate myself. Any issues with quality or freshness?

Not at all. The online stores have such hight turnover rates, hops and yeast are fresh. With a grain mill your grains are more fresh than milling at LHBS and waiting a few days to brew, which was what I usually did.

My hops are coming in too. Just added some more soil, compost, manure, and and put some fresh mulch out today. I have another order of rhizomes coming in and hope to get the other 4 bines going. Currently, 6/10 are showing some action.

I brewed up an IPA with Cosmic Punch Yeast from Omega on Saturday. For those that don't know, cosmic punch is a genetically modified yeast that is targetted to release bound thiols. The parent strain for cosmic punch is Omega's british ale yeast.

Bound thiols are sulfur precursors more commonly found in white wine grapes. Grains for brewing and even some hops also have these bound thiols. What this yeast does is release the thiols which produce very fruity flavors, similar.

Well, as i was cleaning out my fermenting freezer yesterday after a large blowoff, and between bouts of almost passing out from inhaling too much carbon dioxide, the aroma from the blowoff was incredible. Very fruity aroma. Different from hop aroma that would be typical. I added the biotrans hops and put the fermenter back into the freezer. Excited how this may come out. I hope, however, that my dry hopping doesn't remove the thiols enhancement of the beer. Podcasts i've been listening to suggest that the vegetal matter from dry hopping tends to strip away some of those thiol aromas.

Brewing Update:

I'll be cold crashing my cosmic punch IPA tomorrow. Will keg in 2 or 3 days.

I have a helles i brewed on 2/11/23 that is still lagering. This weekend will be week 4 of lagering. 2 more weeks then i'll keg that.

I tasted a few of my mixed ferm sours a week or 2 ago. I tasted a mixed ferm biere de garde and a sach only biere de garde. The sach only BDG was brewed 6 months ago, and the mixed ferm was brewed about 2 years and 4 months ago. I will be blending these this weekend. Half will be bottled, the other half will be racked onto 14 lbs. of blackberries, sitting another 2-3 weeks, then will be kegged. This will be the last batch of this i make. With 9 fermenters of mixed ferm beer, my plan is to brew a bunch of blender batches to free up some space and stick with only 3 or 4 mixed ferm beers at any 1 time.

I also tasted a mixed ferm belgian farmhouse with aged hops. Wanted to see if i could get a quick lambic by just using aged hops. The beer is super dry and very funky. Has a very unique funkness to it. Not very acidic. I'll be bottling this one this weekend as well. This batch was brewed back in June of 22. I'll be interested in brewing more of these and ramping up the acidity a bit.

My geueze project is still coming along. I currently have 4 lambics aging.
Brew Dates: 12/29/20 - TM (turbid mash), 6/19/21 - TM, 12/4/21 - IM (Infusion Mash), 2/27/22 - TM, and 12/20/22. This will be my main sour beer focus after i bottle up a few more sours. These 4 beers will constitute the blend of my first bottles of Gueuze. I'll continue to brew this beer once or twice a year and keep the pipeline going.

Next beers to brew:

Blender batch for my L'Internationale Mixed Ferm Saison (Gold medal winner at boot brew fest).
Blender batch for my Bring on da funk Brett beer (Bronze medal winner at Tour de Brew).
Italian Pilsner
Final blender batch of my Solera project. Another beer that needs to clear out. Last batch was brewed December 2019. Need to blend and bottle.

Did some beer things yesterday.

I puree'd and pasteurized 14 lbs. of blackberries. Blended 10 gallons of biere de garde. 5 gallons of a 2020 mixed ferm batch, and 5 gallons of a clean batch. Half was racked onto the blackberries.

I plan to bottle the blend and another mixed ferm beer saturday. The blackberry blend will sit for a couple more weeks and let refermentation take place and finish, before i keg.

From L to R - Puree'd blackberries, sour BDG, clean BDG

Blending beer

Final 2 beers blended/racked

I finally bit the bullet and made a bulk order of grains from Northern Brewer, along with a grain mill... Wasn't cheap, but I'm hopeful it will make brewing more enjoyable for me. I'll always have ingredients on hand to brew something if I have a free weekend, and I'll be able to be more creative now that I'm not limited to what is supplied by LA Homebrew.

Got my bulk order arriving next week. Got 3 brews already planned for next weekend! Doubt I get to them all, especially with The Masters on TV, but I can knock out 1 or 2 for sure.

Planning a Blueberry Berliner Weisse, an Italian Pilsner, and a half batch of Pina Colada NEIPA.
