It's been a good while since I've even calculated efficiency. The beers are turning out in the abv range I intended so I'll just assume the efficiency is good enough.

After the timer goes off I cut the ball valve on the outlet of my pump to about 1/2 open, move the re-circulation tubing to the boil kettle, and as the water drains I top off the water to keep it above the grain bed.

Outflow from mash tun is full speed?

This is where I'm different. I'll gladly pay $1.25 for another pound of 2-row, take my 72% efficiency, and cut 2 hours off my brew day by batch sparging.

I'm already setup for fly sparging, and i like my brew process. More than one way to brew a cat.

Just wish i could cut an hour out of brewday. Next brewday i'll be a lot more pro active on cleaning and being setup before i brew.

yeah, you don't want to restrict the flow on the inlet on those march pumps bc you can lose your priming.

So if you want to slow down the flow rate you have to put the ball valve on the outlet of the pump.

This is exactly how I manage my sparge, I may go slightly slower than you but how hot it is has a direct impact on how fast I sparge.

Ah yes, I was confused for a second. I was thinking you were referring to the pump supplying the sparge water. How is sparge water supplied in your setup?

With a plastic Spaten pitcher I drunkenly acquired at Dixie Cup one year.

So I'm in the middle of another double brew day, don't know why I do this to myself, lol, and am going to have to leave before I can boil batch 2. I'll only be gone 2 hours tops, can I just leave the wort in the boil kettle until I get back? I don't really have a lid for my keggles that fits tightly, it just sits on top of the rim and the handle holes are exposed.

Quick rundown of my brew day so far
Started at 4
Couldn't get the regulator on my buff burner to work so using a smaller one
Got distracted hearing my strike water and let it get to 180
Finally got it cooled and mashed in at 4:45
Cooked supper; grilled salmon and mushrooms and pineapple rice
Just finished the sparge, about to start the boil
Didn't think to get the kettle on the burner and sparge into a bucket this time so lost some time there

Just about done chilling after a 60 minute boil and 20 minute hop stand at 180

should have this thing tucked away by 8:45, not bad with such a poor start

Good luck to all the guys at Brew at the Zoo today. If i didn't have to prep for my son's 1st birthday party, i'd be there drinking your wares.

On a side note, i'll be cracking my IPA i made a few weeks ago. It's been carbing for 12 days. It's a little early, but i'm getting impatient. It'll probably need at least another week before its ready, but should get a good representation of the hop profile

Should be good I'd imagine.

Will probably be doing something similar to what LSUGrad is doing with a 10 gallon batch of belgian wheat beer and splitting off 5 gallons for a Gose here pretty soon for a competition coming up.

Outlaw homebrew comp put on by the Keg and Barrel in Hattiesburg.

We've participated every year and it's always been a good time and successful for us. They only have IPA Pale Ale Wheat Stout and Misc categories.

It's more of a Beerfest with a competition than a mail your beer to type competition.

So I spilled 6 gallons of IPA wort last night... Never felt so worthless before.

That sucks. I always have the fear, that when i'm bringing my carboy inside to bottle, i'm going to drop it right before i make it to the cabinet.

It's not the money, it's the time and effort wasted that would piss me off.

Is there a way to CO2 purge your carboys without having a kegging system?

I thought i heard of a mini CO2 gun, that uses the small paintball co2 canisters. Would like to do that with my carboys, and purge my bottles until i start kegging.
