I ordered a 5 gallon whiskey barrel for homebrewing a week or 2 ago and it just came in. I can't brew until the end of may, so i'm wondering what i should do with it in the meantime.
I filled it with water to test for leaks, so far so good.

Is it ok just to drain it of the water and let it sit with the bung in the barrel? Or should i keep some water in it to keep it moist? Or maybe some cheap whiskey?

I don't have a clue. I would think it would be better to keep it wet and swelled up, but I have no proof or experience to back that up, so my opinion is worthless. But then again what if some bug is in the water and seeps deep into the wood and comes back out when you fill it with beer?

I almost bought one a few weeks back too. Was it that one that was on sale? I forget what site, but I remember seeing it recently. Money was tight when I saw it.

Still pissed that mine hasn't come in yet. But I was told that you need a couple cups of booze in it to keep it wet

is it charred in the inside?

my parents used to have an actual jack daniels barrel from their distillery. had jack daniels and a lot # or something stamped on the side. used it as a end table type of thing when i was a kid. dont know if they got rid of it or put it in storage. i know, csb

This. I'd try to use the same whiskey that it was originally used for, or at least something close.

Same.

Booze should prohibit and bacteria from growing.

Yes, and it smells strongly of whiskey.

There are notes on the side of the barrel in marker. Apparently it was barreled 2/22/12 and then dumped 2/28/12. The whiskey is balcones baby blue corn whiskey, from the stamp on the other side.

Apparently a bottle goes for $44.

I think I would just put some cheap whiskey in there.

Brewstock is advertising that he is getting some of those barrels in 3-4 weeks at 79 a piece. Hopefully Main Grain will get theirs before then since that is what I was told would happen when I ordered.

Not a problem. originally he had them at 55 when we first talked about it, but that was months ago. Main Grain got me committed at 90 before I was aware they would be anywhere else. May dad and I are splitting the 90 so its not a bad price at all. Now it just needs to come in and Main Grain keeps telling me its coming in next week but then it never comes in.

Brewstock came out to $86 after taxes, so not much of a difference.
