A mixture. I really don't mind bottling. It's very Zen, man.

What kind of efficiencies is everyone getting with batch sparging?

I added this length of tubing around the edge of my false bottom and had significantly less issues running off today. So that was nice...

BUT.

Just barely hit the desired OG after starting with a slightly lower pre-boil gravity and a 30 minute or so boil before the boil.

Didn't have to mess with any DME or anything but I'd like to not have to boil for longer than 60 minutes to get where I'm supposed to be.

Morebeer instructions said I should be between 1.059-1.063 and I think it came out to be 1.058 going into the fermentor.

Saison with 3711 and a Wit, both in anticipation of the warmer weather.

I get pretty good efficiency with the last two times I have batched sparged. It ended up right on point I believe. The trippel I did may have come out slightly low but I still ended up at 1080+ which was where I wanted it to be.

What's on the brewing calendar for the weekend guys (and gals, are there any gal brewers who post here?)?

Was going to brew my American Pale Ale Sunday. However, Saturday had a crawfish boil at the house. I woke up sunday morning and realized i would be cleaning the backyard for a couple hours so scrapped the brew.
So now i will be dumping out my yeast starter. Reordered the yeast again and i WILL BREW saturday.

Yeah, I fly sparged and ended up a little 60%... not really sure what I'm doing wrong. Talked with Frat a bit last night and couldn't identify anything as the culprit. Did sparge a little more than intended but even when I calculated based on that it was the just under 60% number.

How do you calculate efficiency? I've been hand calculating my efficiency using how to brew's grain efficiency table. But my problem, is they give you a range of points to use, instead of a single number, for each grain.

But so far, of my 3 all-grain brews. 68%, 74%, 79% efficiency. If i'm calculating correctly. I fly sparge, by the way.

I plugged the recipe in to BrewAlchemy, and then input the pre-boil gravity, adjusting for temps.

My first one was about 80%... been downhill from there.

Ok. I use beersmith as well, i guess I could just plug in to that program, which would be much easier.

Why would you do this? I've kept starters for up to two weeks before and I'm sure you could go longer if you had to. On Brewday, just make up a small starter in the 700 ml range to jumpstart the yeast and pitch the whole thing.

Didn't think it would stay good for that long. I don't have a stir plate either.

But, i don't know that much about the viability of starters after a few days. All i know is i make one for every batch.

And i've already ordered another vial.

I get right at 70-72% with my batch sparges. Depending on my grain bill, I usually have a 1.25qt:lb ratio for my mash and then have a pretty big sparge volume as I boil for 90 minutes and need the extra water.

Just throw that yeast starter on the fridge and pull it out the morning of brew day. Your yeast will be fine. No reason to waste another yeast vile

I would always get around 70% when I batch sparged. I found that my efficiencies varied based when and where I ordered my crushed grain. If I ordered three kits from the same place at the efficiencies of those batches would all be similar. I'd order from somewhere else and the efficiency would shoot up or down.

When I started milling my own grain my efficiency became a lot more consistent. I'm now somewhere around 75%.
