The whole Coach family from Mrs. Coach to Poppa and Momma Coach are headed to Milwaulkee to go to Lambeau for the LSU game. Mrs. Coach is of very German decent, and we hear that there are a bunch of great places in Milwaulkee. I checked Google and travel sites, but would rather the opinions of the F&D as y'all always stear me right.

Has anyone been to Milwaulkee and ate at some of the German places? Opinions? Can't miss? Avoid?

Yeah, autocorrect didn't hook me up there. I am a terrible speller.

Your best bet for a full on Germanic beer hall is the Old German Beer Hall LINK . Might follow it up with Von Trier's LINK /
If you're willing to scale the German influence back a touch, I'd go for the Lakefront Brewery's Friday fish fry: LINK Live polka, big room, good beers, and great fried fish. It closes earlier than the other places, so the play might be Lakefront for dinner than the other two for more beers.

I spent a bit of time in Brewtown and am (in part) of German heritage. You will want to hit up one of two German restaurants which have been around for over a century. Karl Ratzsch or Mader's. Both have excellent true German food, from Mader's famous pork shank to Wiener Schnitzel to Sauerbraten. I'm partial to Mader's, and if you go, make sure you take a stroll down the hallway to the restrooms and check out the photos of all of the famous people who have dined there. Curly from the Three Stooges swears by the pork shank. I usually get the Sauerbraten when I'm there, but now that I've tackled the recipe I can branch off next time I'm there. I even have some marinading as we speak. I start with the reuben rolls (Tasty bits of corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese inside a wonton wrap, with fresh crispy fried spinach and German mustard sauce), and move onto the baked onion soup. Treat yourself to stein of beer, or better yet, a glass boot. Make sure you drink the boot with the toe facing toward you so you don't get splashed. Those in the know laugh at people who splash themselves with each drink.

Lakefront Brewery makes some fantastic beer. Sprecher is very popular too. I like their black bavarian, and they make THE BEST orange soda (orange dream...tastes like a dreamcycle) I've ever tasted, and I don't even care for soda.

Across from Mader's is the famous Usinger sausage outlet. Take a peek in there. Also next to Mader's is the famous Spice House, which I wish I still had access to. I have to order online now and the shipping is a bit pricey.

Hope this helps. I've been to those German restaurants dozens of times.

Milwaukee has a beautiful art museum and a world class zoo if you're looking for something to do.

If you need any more suggestions, I spent decades there and know the city like the back of my hand.

Old German Beer Hall, Von Trier's
The Old German Beer Hall is actually newer, with very little German history. Good beers, yes, but for a German experience and food, Mader's or Ratzsch is where you want to check out. If you do grab a beer at Von Trier's, just around the corner is the famous Oriental Theater, which boasts the longest continual screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Except for the winters, I really miss what the city has to offer.

My mouth is watering just thinking about those Reuben rolls. I can't wait to go now. We will most certainly go to Mader's! I'm just trying to find a way to cram as much of the city in as possible. We land at 9:15 on Friday. Saturday at the game until post game we come back to the city. Sunday we leave early.

Now, I'm wanting to take a longer trip there.

What's you advice for someone who basically has 1 day, and one separate evening? How can I get as much in as possible? Factor in several other Tiger fans

Ok, so Sunday brunch is out. Where are you staying? What is the age of this Tiger posse and how many?

I'm a few years removed from the ever evolving brunch scene. I thought I'd google to see if anything triggered a place that I had to implore you to try, but most are newer places that I'm not familiar with.

My favorite (Milwaukee) brunch is Golden Mast Inn, but that's 30 miles away. I love that restaurant. Last time I was there I got the elk medallions ftw.

The correct local pronunciation of the city is "Mowaukee".

If someone agrees with what you said, you may hear them say, "ya der hey".

If you're thirsty, ask for a "bubbler". It's the only place on earth where a drinking fountain is called a bubbler.

You're a half mile away from Mader's if your group is capable of walking. If not, Mader's has an adjacent parking lot with a valet parking guy. They don't close during the day, so that might be a perfect Friday afternoon food spot. Restaurants in Milwaukee on Fridays tend to be a bit crazy, especially for fish fries. Whereas every day is a fish fry day here in Louisiana, people flock in droves on Friday nights to get fried fish, usually all you can eat. I'd check out Mader's later afternoon on Friday or make damned sure you have a reservation for either night.

Oh it's a crazy thing on Friday nights in that city. Restaurants compete with Friday fish fries, usually all you can eat as I've mentioned.

Well I ain't flying 2000 miles to eat no fried fish. I'm eating pork shanks and sausage until I puke, pass out, or explode.

My money is on pass out as I am not a puker.

Thanks for all the tips. I'll try to remember to take pics and update when I return.

Went there to see Sturgill Simpson a few months ago. We had dinner at Mader's. Good food and somewhat creepy vibe. After the show we went to the bar connected to Mader's and the whole band was there (no Sturgill unfortunately). We got them a few rounds and didn't bug them after thanking them for the performance, We really enjoyed Cafe Benelux. It is across from the Milwaukee Public Market. Great bloody Mary's that come with a beer chaser. Food was good too and that is a really neat part of the city. 3rd Ward. I heard great things about lakefront brewery but didn't get out there. Nice city for a quick visit.
