Just walk around and see what people are ordering.. and ask them for a bite of what they're having. It's very common at French Quarter Fest to share.
I always look for the longest line. My theory is if the lines long, the food is worth the wait.

Going for the first time on Saturday. Where is the best place to park for this event, since the website is advising to take the free shuttle from teh CBD?

We like to park at Harrah's. You can play at a table for 30 minutes or so and get the parking ticket validated.

In the parking lot behind the firestation at the corner of Esplanade and Decatur.

Let's not get carried away. While I enjoyed some of the food, others were very dissapointing. The festival does not live up to the hype IMO as far as food is concerned.
ETA: and before I get killed this is what I had:
Cochon de lait poboy. Just a pulled pork sandwich. Huge piece of cartilidge mixed in as well. I won't hold that against them as it happens, but don't let the name fool you
Lobster something from Dang Twan (I have no idea what the name of the food or establishment was) - Nothing special
BBQ Shrimp Poboy - I thought this was pretty good, wife hated it.
Plum Street Snow cone/ball - Nothing different than you can find just about anywhere. I think it just has nostalgia for the locals.
Maybe I had my expectations too high from reading here, hence my choices

Park in the warehouse district and walk. Once you cross Canal street it won't even be worth it. Unless you get there Way early

It's a festival attempting to serve good food to the masses in a timely manner. With that in mind the food is excellent. I've never eaten anything bad there. Mediocre, sure. Nothing in edible.
If you know what to eat I don't see how you can complain. I mean you just complained about a snoball. Seriously, what kind of expectations did u have? "nothing different than what you can get anywhere"? Lol it's a snoball dude. Taste good and cools you off
As for the others, if you can't even remeber the establishments then that's your problem. If it was some place worthwhile, you'd remember. Cause if it were bad, you'd make sure to tell everyone how overrated it was. If it was good you'd make sure to tell everyone how good it was. To not even know the name says enough.

Just the part of the FQ fest by the Old Mint tops those two, then you still have the Jackson Square booths and the Riverfront booths.
This is my favorite of all the local festivals easily.

You are right, it's just a snowball. From reading here, you would expect an out of body experience. For the other place, everyone knows exactly what I am talking about... Sorry I have a horrible memory.

I like to try and take Elysian Fields down to the river, and take a left and park anywhere I can around there.
I went to the city the other night, and a friend asked me where to find good parking, and I told him "I've never paid for parking in NOLA ever, I just park" (not counting meters)
Not a fan of pay lots.
There will be a large free lot near the power substation, and a lot of on-street parking. Possible other places would be down Canal and just take the streetcar into the quarter.

What makes a NOLA snowball unique is the shaved ice machine that is used here (and invented in NOLA) it has found its way into other places, but the very fine shavings is what makes it.
If you want a truly unique one you need to go to the corner of Roosevelt and Airline at the Metaire/Kenner border. A man there makes all his own syrups and they have bits of fruit in them, no one else comes close to his, IMO.

You have to have a bad snoball before to appreciate a good Nola snoball.
As far as eating stick with the big names or long lines if you are not adventurous or worried about being disappointed
