What are the rules on freezing leftovers? I have some leftover gumbo-style soup that someone dropped off 2, maybe 3 days ago. Can I still freeze some of it for later use, or should I just throw it away? Makes no difference to me either way, just don't want to waste it - also don't want anyone to get sick.

Fwiw it has meat in it if that makes a difference. I usually freeze stuff right away

I would say you can go ahead and freeze it but it would help to know how long ago the person who gave it to you made it. Has it been frozen before?

It was dropped off at our house still warm so I assume they made it right before they brought it. It wasn't frozen before

Bringing it to boil will kill any bacteria

It will, but it's important to remember that boiling won't necessarily get rid of any toxins the bacteria already produced. Some foodborne illnesses don't come because the bacteria infects you, but because the bacteria produces toxins that poison you. You can still get sick from eating some tainted food, even if you reboil it.

This isn't to say that OP's food is tainted. 2-3 days properly stored in the fridge isn't a dealbreaker for me, though it's getting to the limit I'd go before freezing.

I keep left overs in the fridge for 5 days. IF I still have some left I freeze it.

ETA; when I defrost it to eat, whatever doesn't get eaten gets thrown.
