You misread my post. I said what's wrong with saying "let me check"..? Because he said he hates when people say they have toc check.

I'm sorry but if you get angry that your server says let me check on something for you, you need to stay the frick home. They're not saying "frick YOU I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE HAVE".. they're saying "let me check and see for you"

If they have to check to see what beers they regularly serve in the restaurant then they are not doing their job. I'm not saying I get angry about it, far from it, I'm saying as a bartender you should know what you regularly serve.

"Let me check" is perfectly acceptable for a waiter to say to a customer when inquiring about things out of the ordinary.

Example of what not to do as a waiter/bartender:

Me: What kind of bottled beer do you have?
Waiter/Bartender: Not sure. Let me check.

Example of an acceptable "Let me check" response:

Me: I'd like a Bud light and a Hamburger with icecream on top.
Server/Bartender: Alright, let me get that Bud light out to you and I'll go check with the kitchen to see about getting you that ice cream burger.

It's doubtful unless someone has told them something about it before.

The party I referenced earlier, there was a girl in the group who recently graduated and is looking for a job. Understandable, but she looked over the menu for 30 minutes carefully picking only side items and the least expensive things she could find. Yet she was the one who got pissy when another person's item came a little later than ours.

Luckily, the bride's father secretly paid for the entire meal once we finished because if he hadn't, I guarantee 3 or 4 of the diners wouldn't have left decent tips.

But you don't know anything about the person. Maybe it's their first day or so behind the bar alone and they have no idea. Maybe you're asking for an obscure beer and they aren't sure. Maybe they DID have some but they aren't sure if they still have it in stock.

There are many reasons someone might need to check on something and for a poster to say they legitimately get angry when a waiter says "let me check for you".. that's insane.

My point, and his point, is if you have 10 beers in your offerings, and you're the BARTENDER, unless you started today (and even then you should probably know) you need to know what your offerings are.

I'm not going to "dress down" someone who says that, and I'll probably give them the same tip I'd otherwise give, it's just perplexing to me how someone can have a particular job and not be able to bother and acquaint themselves with the most basic of aspects of that job.

Well you made it sound like something totally different.. like you get mad when any waiter in any setting does it.

Out of curiosity...

Do you ever admit when you're wrong?

Amazing. I will say though that the olive oil chip doesn't sound appetizing. I can't believe she brought her kids there! I can't imagine what it cost. I wonder if everyone walks in with a camera there.

I really enjoyed it. He went to mostly very high-end places and then someone's home so it's not like it is places I would ever go. Brock and I have a fascination with these restaurants that serve their food like art and use wild and crazy techniques. That's why I mentioned it to him.

I don't think this is a case where anyone is right or wrong anyway. It's a matter of what kind of diner you are. I'm sure complainers hate people like me that let everything slide by. And I hate them for complaining too much.

They do kinda look like a family that might live in Audubon Place - especially since one of them was going for a third (!!) time.

I probably wouldn't like 20% of that stuff - but the fun of the experience would totally wipe that out, I'm sure.

I think it's priced like the other heavy hitters - a few hundred Euro or so.

There are certain couples we (and a lot of our other friends) will not go out to dinner with - even though they are good friends - because one or both of them usually acts like an entitled arse towards the staff. These folks miss out on a lot simply because they tend to act like idiots at restaurants. I wonder if these folks even realize this...

One of my ex GFs had a father who was the shittiest tipper I ever met. She was a server and I was a bartender and we always wanted to leave good tips.

Her father would pay for the meal, and leave crap tips. I mean like $5 on $85. We offered to buy several times, or offered to take care of the tip, but he insisted. So, inevitably, we had to return to the restaurant minutes later, track down our server, and tip generously, knowing they had been cursing us until we came back.

I'll bet a lot of us have been in that position before.

My parents used to make fun of how much I back up everything I argue. I don't necessarily always think I'm right.. I just aim to get someone to see my side, even if they don't agree. Unfortunately, not all people are like that and don't care about your side. Or they get offended and ruin the debate by getting mean.

I don't understand people that don't tip well.

I'd say the average tip should be double the tax. That's 18%, a very fair tip. I like to tip closer to 25% but that's just me.

My grandfather doesn't. But knowing him, I promise you it's just from lack of culture/experience/know. He probably has no idea that his tips suck.

I always tip SOMETHING. If the service is bad it's a shite tip but they still served me, so I leave at least a few bucks.
