BATON ROUGE- A former LSU assistant professor is being investigated after allegations that he was running a side business selling Alabama oysters he said were from Louisiana.
John Supan, an oyster researcher, is being investigated for selling Alabama oysters here under the premise that those oysters were being grown in Grand Isle, which does not sit well with fisherman and those in the restaurant industry.
"There's that trust factor that people in Louisiana obviously want to get their oysters and seafood from Louisiana and from the Gulf around here," Eric Carnegie, owner of Jolie Pearl in Baton Rouge said.
According to an affidavit, a south Louisiana oysterman reported that he paid for thousands of special oyster seeds specifically from the hatchery in Grand Isle. The state says he may have been misled which is unethical and possibly illegal.

So this is an interesting story but the linked story is awful. He’s apparently not accused of selling mature oysters as LA sourced, he’s accused of selling spat from AL as being from LA. That seed stock is several years from harvest.....ie, the purchaser would have it then put it in LA waters for about three years before it reached anyone’s plate.

This. They did DNA testing on the spat and found extremely high cases of interbreeding in the oysters which studies have shown to be prevalent in Alabama oysters.

Maybe he just transposed the letters?

Is there a taste difference?

Yea, they grow them in cages and not on the bottom, so they are cleaner, tend to be more uniform and smaller than traditional LA oysters. They are also sterile and therefore don't get milky in the summer. I think the taste is noticeably different from traditional Louisiana oysters.
