Just moved into a house that has a mature fig tree bursting with fruit. So far we've just been eating them off the tree. Looking for ideas for other applications -

Fig Preserves - on a biscut there is nothing better. - I just put up anout 6 jars..

Strawberry fig preserves.. Its a mock strawberry preserves made with mashed figs and strawberry Jello. My grandma used to make this every year.
I just put up 5 jars.

If you like I will post recipes later.

I thought I hated fig preserves until I had this. My husband's grandmother makes it. Amazing

Can you post the recipe and technique?

I haven't canned since I helped my grandma put up strawberries about 25 years ago.

Thanks!

You can also simmer them whole in sugar and lemon rind and can them.

I have never tried this, but I bet you could mash them and use them to make something like banana bread. Substitute figs for the banana. I bet it would be good.

I took a bottle of decent bourbon and put about 3/4 of a pound - a pound of figs into a large jar then added the bourbon. I have let them sit for almost 2 months now. Tasted some last night, so much better than expected.

I would have called you crazy for infusion bourbon with figs but last month I went to eat in NYC and had a drink made with date infused makers mark. It was fantastic.

We drank it straight up at first but then added an ice cube. The small amount of water really changed the drink so I think it is going to do really well in a simple cocktail. Thinking maybe just some homemade tonic and a lemon peel.

This sounds good to me in principle - and bourbon is my drink of choice - but almost all bourbons are sweet enough for my taste.

I might try this with brandy, though.

Try that bourbon in an Old Fashion.

Op, you can also wrap the figs in something thin and salty (prosciutto, ham, bacon) and grill them. Had a fig dish few weeks ago with figs wrapped in Serrano ham, grilled, and served with a mint cream. Phenomenal.

Make sure you using Mason Jars with the ruber O ring on the lid like in the old days. Without the proper seal, well, you know the rest of that story.

Not a wine drinker 07. But if they make a fig vodka or fig bourban, look out.

I was gonna say Fig Preserves, but someone did already. So I'm gonna say Fig Newtons. I wonder if you can make those?

How do you keep the birds away?
We had a fig tree when I was a kid. The blue jays got half of them.
