I know very little about expresso, I'd like to get a good coffee maker for our small office of 3-10 people. So maybe 5-10 shots a day. Looking for quality but also bang for the buck.

I have no idea where to start? Not opposed to buying used.

Eta: Not looking to spend $2000 but I also don't want to buy a $200 machine and want to upgrade immediately. So I just don't understand how they go from $150 to $3000 for "home" machines. I understand commercial machines costing that much. So I'm saying my budget is flexible but I have no reason to blow money.

Agreed but I'd prefer to use regular grounds and not pods.

I have a Saeco xSmall from Seattle Coffee Gear. Works great. I never used steam feature, but it’s a full auto. Whole beans load in the top. It grinds, tamps, pulls and ejects puck into a bin.

First thing to know is that it's espresso, not expresso.

Lol, hey I told you I don't know crap about it. I did know that so I'm not sure if it was a typo or just how it came out.

Honestly, if you're only pulling 5-10 shots a day, then a Nespresso original line machine is your best bet. It will require less maintenance & fiddling and can be operated by anyone from the high school intern to the grumpy old man who really prefers drip coffee. Other than descaling every few months, you won't need to worry about it. And, the machines are cheap compared to a "real" espresso machine.

You say you don't want pods, but do you really want to buy beans on a weekly basis? Sure, a superautomatic machine will grind, tamp, pull the shot for you, but if someone isn't responsible for loading it with fresh beans & tossing the old ones, you're gonna have nasty coffee. Plus, you can't really offer caf/decaf in quick succession without swapping beans, etc. So think about whether your group & visitors want decaf as well.

I've got a Nespresso Citiz at my office; husband has an old Pixie at his office. I use mine 3-4 times a week, and it's still going strong after 4 years.

You can set a recurring pod delivery from Nespresso so no one has to have the "coffee detail" as a job responsibility.

I have a cheap standard regular drip coffee pot. We have a Nespresso at home. I'm not a fan of a hot americano in the afternoon, I am just thinking something different and half way nice would be a nice perk.

Breville BES870XL Barista Express
Or
Rancilio Silvia

For an office setting with multiple users, the Breville probably makes the most sense.

No need to be drinking watery coffee if you don't like it.

I'm not a fan of the new Vertuo line machines Nespresso is peddling. They're pitched at Americans who want the flexibility of a long cup or an espresso...but you are locked into using bar-coded Nespresso brand pods only. No thanks.

The classic line machines' pods are out of patent now, so you can get Nespresso compatible pods from other makers, like Illy. Thus, more options. A basic original line machine costs less than $200, so buy one and see how it goes for the office.

I'll be honest here, of all the people I'm surprised you push something like Nespresso so hard! For most things especially F&D related, you push the old fashion right way.

I kinda want to do it the hard way though, that's the thing. I may change my mind in 2 weeks and order a Nespresso. I know they are handy. But at least give the old college try.

I was thinking I could get a machine for $400-500. Maybe even a used one in that range.

Also don't forget to budget for a decent burr grinder. The whirlybird "grinders" don't create a uniform size. Some grinds are like powder while others are big chunks.

My better half is a coffee geek. We have everything from an Aeropress to a Clever to a Chemex to a stovetop Bialetti moka, french press, porcelain drip percolator, Breville espresso machine, Baratza grinder, blah blah blah. Even he uses the Nespresso most often. Sometimes you just want coffee, without fussing.
