Yesterday morning I had a quick pork floss mini banh mi(#8). Bread was a bit chewy, fillings were lacking. C-tier but very cheap at 40 cents each.

Later that night I was cruising on a motorbike when I saw some chicken wings grilling. I have a rule. When I see wings grilling on the side of the street, I stop by. These were very good…smokey, sweet/salty with a hint of lemongrass. $7 for 10 whole wings.

That's my rule in Mexico. When I see someone grilling in the side of the road I stop. Usually find a cheap great meal.
. This thread has me seriously looking into going to Vietnam.
I have a few things golding me back from travel right now. But if I could I would go this fall.
Looks amazing and then I've been watching YouTube videos on all the stuff to do.
On top of the food it looks amazing.

If I were you, I would go late January or February. The weather in Da Nang around that time would be in the 70s. It’s like LA weather now in the summer.

Was craving some sweets last night. Stopped by this place for Malaysian coconut ice cream. This is what I like about Vietnam. It’s the randomness you can run across. By day this corner sidewalk would be vacant with no activity. But by night it’s an outdoor ice cream shop.

5 scoops ice creams in a coconut bowl with coconut jelly, freshly grated coconut meat, sticky rice, crushed peanuts, cookie stick, and topped with candied Malaysian gooseberry. Very good that I ate 2 bowls. 30k($1.20)

Got some chicken congee/porridge for breakfast. What would make this better would eating it outside in mid 50s weather. Eating it during the summer makes you feel like you just got out of a sauna when finished. But it’s so good that you can’t stop eating.

Yesterday I was chilling in the front of my stay when this woman vendor on her bicycle was passing by. Often you will see mobile vendors passing by on motorbikes, bicycles, push cart selling goodies. It’s like the ice cream man passing through the American neighborhood(or used to be)

She woman was selling various cakes.

I was suggested to try her crispy sticky rice shrimp dumplings. I’ve never had these before(#3) so I had to get them. I was going to get just one order of 5 but I ended eating three orders because they are so addicting. I think her home made fish sauce really made this dish. To be honest I thought I looked bland, but this is a case of “looks can be deceiving”. It was so good that I sipped it the remaining.

Crispy, chewy, umami, spicy.

I’ve been living on the streets so much that I decided yesterday to book a fancy stay at the Voco Ma Belle hotel to refine my taste. One reason I decided this was the impressive complementary breakfast. But bad news. Upon arrival and checking in, I was told that it was not complementary and it costs 550k ($21) per person. Im going to pass on that price. Maybe I can sneak in to check it out.

After getting bummed out about the breakfast situation, we decided to walk around around to find dinner. This guy in a vehicle that looks like a golf cart with 3 rows offered to drive us around.

We stopped by at this holes in the wall local shop. Here’s what we got for $17.

Stir fry garlic morning glory. Got to have this.

Beef stir fry noodles. They taste exactly how they look.

Stir fry frog legs with lemongrass.

Steamed clams with lemongrass. The star of this dish is the broth.

Grilled oysters with bacon grease, green onions, topped with peanuts(I know it sounds weird)

Bo Ne(dodging beef) for breakfast this morning. Named because the food comes sizzling at the table that you have to dodge the grease. Essentially, it’s Vietnam version of steak and egg. I’m going to count this as banh mi # 9.

Front

This place is kind of cool because it’s a one item on the menu. So the cook is constantly cooking the Bo ne to keep up with the customers coming in. So when we walked to our table, the food was already there, sizzling on a cast on plate.

You just break the banh mi bread layer it the beef, egg, meatball. Kind of expense at $2.75, but it’s because beef is a lot more expense than pork or chicken here.

After breakfast, I went straight to a sports bar to watch the UFC fights.

Random story here. I was sitting here watching the fights. There must’ve been another 17 expats in there from various countries…US, European countries, Russia. This bartender girl asked where I was from and I said America. She said Vietnamese locals don’t watch UFC, only soccer. I told her I was from LA to which she replied “that’s where crawfish is from” and it has “cayun” food. I could help but correct pronunciation. She then added that she wants try “jump”. I realized that she wanted to say gumbo and she smiled when I told her about it. Kind of cool Cajun food getting known half way across the globe.

She also said there’s crawfish here but it’s the trashy Chinese import. Sounds like she would get along with F&D board.

Da Nang, i prefer the laid back city with beach over bustling HCMC. Although, HCMC food options are much more diverse. I’m having issues finding some items here. How long are you in HCMC and which district?

Ah gotcha …. My LSU/BR native buddy set up outside of Hoi An indefinitely. You guys should meet up for a drink if you are around for a bit longer.

I have to fly back to BKK for work tomorrow, but it has been a good stay. Used some points and am on the river in D1.

Hoi An is just 30 minute ride south of me. I will probably plan a trip there for a day or two. I didn’t know you work in Bangkok. I’m kind of jealous that you have access to Thailand’s diverse sticky rice.

Yeah, I’m definitely getting spoiled by the cheap eats here. Might take me a while to readjust to US prices when I get back.

Breakfast this morning with 2 kinds of chicken sticky rice.

Rotisserie version

Chicken salad version and washing it down with freshly made soy milk. And yes, it was better than Yeo’s.

Last night we went to Vincom, the local mall for dinner.

Front

This was a conveyer belt hot pot that we almost went to. Cool concept.

Decided on a Korean BBQ.

Inside

Ordered 2 plates of meat, Kim chi soup, fried dumplings, and fried sushi rolls. I was surprised they used charcoal to cook instead of gas. 1.1 million($43).

On the way home , pick up a combination banh mi(#10) at a popular local vendor. So much going on with this banh mi and they all go well together, S-Tier.
