Dining Options Near Dauphin Island

I'm heading to Dauphin Island in a couple of weeks and I plan on taking my girlfriend out to dinner one evening.
I would ideally like some quality seafood while I'm there but the pickings on the island look pretty slim.
Gulf Shores is right across the bay but unfortunately the ferry doesn't run past 7:15 and it's around $35 for the service anyway.
Are there any worthy restaurants within a 30-minute drive of Dauphin Island?

The restaurants there are decidedly average at best. I ended up getting fresh seafood from one of the markets on the island where they had a solid selection. Ended up cooking sheepshead and bbq shrimp and it was much better than any dining we could find.

There's nothing there that would hold up to your esteemed "dining out rules of thumb"

I assume you're talking about Skinner's Seafood Market. I planned on stopping in there to get some fresh fish if the prices are reasonable.
I wasn't sure if Bayou La Batre, Tillman's Corner, or Mon Louis had any viable options.

Don't you just eat salads anyways when going out to eat?

Like the previous posters have stated - very slim pickings on the island itself. Your best best if you want good food is to drive up to Mobile. Felixs is pretty good for seafood in the mobile Bay Area (excellent service too). It's about a 40-45 minute drive from DI.
Eta: just remember you aren't in LA anymore, the definition of "good seafood" is a bit different over in those parts.

Bring food down with you. DI is kinda like Grand Isle as far as the restaurant scene goes, maybe worse if thats possible.

Go back across bridge and eat at Pelican Reef on 193 between Bellingrath Gardens and the Bay.
Best bet down that side of bay. Better still, drive back to Mobile and eat on causeway at top of the bay,

Catalina in Coden(you'll pass right in front of it) has excellent seafood and the fried chicken is great

I am almost tempted to drive all the way to Mobile for some good seafood, but the cheap arse in me isn't willing to burn so much gas for a single meal.

I think you can eat fried fish/shrimp/oysters at any of the restaurants mentioned.
As someone (above) correctly stated, seafood in that part of Alabama is going to be fried with fries and hushpuppy's. That's not saying it is bad, just limited in scope with a limited dining experience too. There are so few tourists on that side of the bay that a "Nice" place would go out of business from lack of customers. The locals could care less for tablecloths and ceramic dishes.
The beer will still be cold if that helps. we have crossed Dauphin Island to reach the ferry (Maybe three times in 25 years) and never stayed longer than that. It won't be crowded. I think Ivan crossed a little east of the island and just about wiped it out if my memory is correct.
