Any recommendations? There are so many places that its a bit overwhelming. Dont want anything where I need to wear a suit since Im not bringing one. Would prefer some nice bistros.

Also my wife has a fear that people will screw with her since she doesnt speak any French. Any experience with this?

We had a very nice trip in 2000, not sure if any recs still hold. One of my favorites was a very small place La Mere Agitee (The Angry Grandmother)

La Mere Agitee Link

Review

Very small place, hard to find, but worth it. When we were there no menu, they just served what they had prepared, it was wonderful. Didn't ask us if we wanted wine, they just put a bottle on the table and charged us by what we drank.

Except for a night at Maxim's, we stuck to the bistros and brasseries, it was all great. We don't speak French either, but that was never a problem. In spite of the reputation, the people we met were friendly, helpful and polite, I find that people tend to treat you the way you treat them. The only problem waiter we ran into had the worst food of the trip, an overpriced place on the Champs Elysee (never eat on that street, tourist trap).

Oh, what was the grandmother angry about? Taxes, it's like 50% in Paris.

A lot of people like this book:

Across the Seine from Notre Dame is a nice brasserie, up the river at the Point Neuf bridge go past the Metro station and at the next intersection is a street with several jamming little places. Back at the river directly across from the Louvre is a place listed in the where to watch a game notice on the front page.

I'd check out David Lebovitz's blog. He was the former pasty chef at Chez Panisse, lives in Paris, and has a bunch of recommendations for neighborhood restaurants in Paris. Check under the My Paris link, there's a restaurant archive.

Was just there in December, should not be a problem at all. A simple bonjour goes a long way.

Check out Chez Michel up near Montmartre for that little bistro experience you are looking for. LINK

L'Atelier Joel Robuchon

Great place. Not as stuffy as most top tier restaurants. Connected to a business friendly hotel, so they are used to english speaking patrons.

If you like chocolate make sure you go to Angelina's for some of their famous hot chocolate. It's very thick and Rich! It's near the Louvre: LINK

I stayed near Rue Cler and had some great crepes that were made on that street. They also have other food shops there.. There's a famous cheese shop on that street.

Certainly one of the best meals I've ever had. The most expensive, for sure.

French food is horrible.

edit:

I figured someone would think it was serious and get all pissy if I didn't do the laughy.

Although it was way funnier without it.

I would imagine that is fairly expensive and I would need to dress up.

Im looking for more casual food places in Paris.

BTW Im staying in the area bordering the 7th and 15th district on the river.

Go here, Catman. LINK

Best oysters you will ever have (although not sure when you are going). Very similar to Casamentos in a limited menu served by owner/operators in a white tiled room.

Da Rosa, Le Baron Rouge, great little snackie places.

If by Bro in Law is on the board and reading this, perhaps he can remember the little place we found during an overnight layover on our way back from Italy in Feb 20007 (thanks wife).

We were literally wandering around the city, trying to see as much as we could in a few hours, got hungry and ducked into a little side street restaurant because the menu looked good in the window. Ended up with a really great little meal at truly local joint.

My memory sucks and I cannot for the life of me remember where it was or what the name was.

This is what I plan on doing a lot of for our meals.

Just would like to have some places reserved in memory incase I run into them. The area we are staying doesnt seem to have that many places mentioned though. I guess we are about .5 mile from the eiffel tower west on the Seine at Novotel Tour Eiffel.

I know one requisite I have from the wife is that I find a place to get good crepes.

Just follow the river from your hotel, it isn't a long walk from there to the Latin Quarter, Notre Dame, the Louvre will be on the other side of the river.
