Oh, and, if you need a really big, unhealthy breakfast after a big night, head over to the Hickory House. do NOT eat lunch or dinner there.

Thanks for all the suggestions, Burlee

best place in town right now - Root Down
Slow food movement stuff though, seasonal menu, heavy on vegetarian options.
I hit a great mexican polace in aspen but don'w recall the name.
Potager and vesta are the only othe rplaces I hit on your list. Both are excellent, Potager is better.

i had a day in denver and got lunch at:
biker jim's gourmet hot dogs
and dinner at fruition. it was one of the best meals of my life. the chef and maitre' d at fruition came from mizuna - another denver mainstay - so you know they're legit.

I lived there for a couple years as well in the early 80's. Trying to remember. Woody Creek Tavern was a cool place to have a cocktail. Used to see John Denver in there a lot. Cooper Street Bar? Great little dive and I remember Little Annies and the Red Onion. The little crepe stand outside Cooper Street.
And the high end Chinese at Snowmass. Something Lion? Think John Denver owned a piece of it. And I believe it was the place that had Doc and Hooker the magician bartenders. Fold a hundred dollar bill in with a rubberband around it and a dart or nail laid flat and they would toss it through the moving ceiling fan and stick it into the ceiling.
I worked at the Uhlerhoff at the bottom of the big burn. Did a lot of drinking at Gail's High Alpine. Roommate was head waiter at Chart House and he knocked down about 500 a night four nights a week. Lot of money for a early 20's single waiter. I ate great steaks four nights a week although it was midnight when I got them.
A couple of other people (one guy one woman) lived in TeePees on the backside of Aspen Mountain.
I miss those days.
October will be gearing up for the season but there is plenty to do. When is the balloon festival?
Good luck. You'll love it. I will be there for Christmas or New Years and I'm ready since it has been many years myself. If you are flying into Aspen Airport close your eyes because they dive bomb over the mountain into it and it looks like you are going into the side of the next mountain then smoke the brakes that makes the seatbelt cut into your kidneys. Pretty hairy. But you will see more private jets than anywhere else with the exception of Augusta during the Masters.
Think Scott Fetzer still have an antique shop there. He moved there when I did and never came back. I wish I would not have as well.

I bartended at The Chart House for the "90 and "91 season. Lived next to NY Pizza. Our favorite spot was a small Mexican restaurant downtown named La Cocina. Great food and great prices for a struggling "local."
It was a party everyday and night. Loved living there.
Most restaurants are gone because of high rents and labor.
Enjoy the nightlife.

Wow...your post brought back some memories. I knew Scott Fetzer well when I was in Aspen. I cooked at the restaurant (Silver City) next door to his antique shop and we would hang out when it was slow. I remembered Cooper City (a/k/a Stupid City) well and we hung out there a lot, but I had forgotten about the Onion. When you mention the crepe stand, are you talking about the popcorn wagon? I had some friends that worked at the Chart House - we would hang out there every once in awhile, but couldn't eat there much on a local's budget.

So did you guys live in Aspen or down valley....like Basalt? I interned in Aspen one summer ('89) and paid $1600 for a shack (you could see daylight through the walls) in Snowmass. Most the young people in my office lived down valley and had 40 minute commutes. That's one of the reasons I didn't go to work for that company when I graduated....that and the snow and cold....I'm not a skier.

I lived in several places...all in Aspen. Most of the time, it was like 4 of us in a 2 BR, so the cost was manageable. More often than not, a couple of us would end up crashing at someone else's place (we partied alot) so it was never too bad. My favorite spot was a 2 BR in the Tipple Inn which was above the Tippler which is at the base of Ajax. I was literally 15 feet from the gondola and 100 yards from my job. Other two places we lived in was a house on main street and an apartment down at the end of Dunlap street towards the pass.

My brother worked at Montagna. Clearly the best in Aspen. It's seasonal, so it's hard for me to give you a go to, but if it's on the menu, then MAKE SURE you get the porchetta. You can thank me later. Chef Ryan Hardy has his own farm, and it's as fresh as it gets, and seriously phenomenal. Word's just can't describe it. Also, get the Charcuterie board to start. You'll fall in love. OH yeah, and anything with pasta. It's all the real thing, hand made, and to perfection. Another nice spot there is D19, but I see it's now closed. Sad. Anyway, try Hotel Jerome for lunch, not the J bar where crazy man Hunter S. Thompson hung, but the main dining room. Believe it or not, many of the local talent work there to pick up shifts during the day, those who aren't on the slopes. Matsuhisa is also a very nice Japanese restaurant. Lots of awards, and one of the best chefs in the world. Nobu Matsuhisa has built an empire. A MUST.
Do NOT go to the Wild Fig though. They absolutely blew a papillote that I would have thought was impossible to do it, but they found a way.
Ajax tavern is fantastic for lunch. It's right on the bottom near the lift on the bottom of Ajax Mountain. Get the chicken liver pate and truffle fries. MONEY.

I lived in a studio apartment on 2nd Street for a year and then rented a three story house just between Woody Creek and Basalt. 6 lived in it and it was really nice. Spark a fatty in the evening and watch an elk peek in the back window.
All of us worked in the restaurants for the ski passes and we also did some major cooking in that house since once we got home we rarely ventured back into town. I remember one roommate roasted a whole deer about 60 pounds that he had killed. Wrapped that in bacon and it was amazing.
