Any of you guys have these? This deal popped up today and it is obviously a steal if the knives are any good. What says you?

Yeaaaah you're not getting three actual hand made Japanese knives for $50 bucks.

Go to Chef Knives to Go if you want the real deal.

This would make me question its legitimacy since katanas are not made of Damascus (Wootz) steel. Nor is anything that costs $50.

The techniques for making Damascus steel were lost over a century ago. So except for one guy in Florida who is close to re-discovering how to make it, there is no such thing as new Damascus steel. Wootz steel is made in a crucible. In other words it's completely melted, not heated and folded over and over like a katana.

That said, the phony Damascus does look pretty cool. It just bugs me that a lot of people are out there selling something as Damascus when in reality it's just folded.

One of the reviews said the Damascus look was imprinted on the steel and not actual Damascus steel. That would explain the cheap price.

DaovuaChefKnivestogo

If you don’t want to spend money on something refined check out these bad boys. They are actually hand made by a Vietnamese bladesmith. There are videos of the ol boy making them on the site. They are made out of old car leaf springs. I picked up the petty to replace a POS zwilling I had and it’s a cool little knife. I passed it on my 5k shapton pro and it’s fricking razor now. Again, watch the video and read up on it. They aren’t refined at all, but it’s a good steel.

I have a couple other knives of higher quality from chefknivestogo and it’s a good site to buy from.

If I remember correctly, they gave him parameters and he made them some one offs. They went back and forth then chose some styles.

Agreed. I also like the fact chefknivestogo works directly with the smiths.

Absolutely love my Anryu Blue gyuto.

Watched a bit of the video of them sharpening the blades but was put off by the size of the tang on those knives. The tang is very tiny when compared to all the meat of the blade. I realize they use a small, roundish handle on these knives but the tang looks to only go about 1/2 way into the handle and it very spindly.

I get that.... it’s $40 and it’s handmade from leaf springs which is 5160 steel, you can’t expect that much from that price point.

What are you going to compare that knife too? A stamped POS blade from bed bath for $40? You can’t... not for the money and or the quality of steel you’re getting. Again... I have better knives from chefknivestogo and get the whole deal with spending good money on quality work. The knife isn’t meant to cut bone or be on a line in a restaurant.... although I bet that gyuto he makes is a laser and could be used.

They are trying to help that guy out and he makes some cool shite and it’s a great story. So, frick it... I got one and will prolly get one more style if the edge holds cause that bitch is easy to sharpen.

Also... it’s not like the OP was in the market for a $400 gyuto. He is looking at a fake Damascus blade... just trying to help the guy make a better decision.

There are excellent Japanese sanmai carbon steel knives at the $40 price point on CKTG. I own one. It's the one I let my wife use.

Yeh... it’s the same reason why I grabbed that one. I just thought it was a cool story, plus I won’t give shite cause I can resharpen it easily if my wife or company frick it up.
