Andre' Lege is not mincing any words about what he feels will be the economic ripple effects of COVID-19 on the seafood industry.

The owner of Chez Francois - a Lafayette seafood retailer and processor - is also a crawfish farmer.

“ I’m a small farmer… I’m not making a living,” sympathizes Leger, “but the big farmers are gonna lose tremendously because they have so much more involved.”

The farmer I use is very busy. I don’t see the Chinese virus hurting the crawfish business at all

Hopefully the price of frozen tail drops at least

One of my customers here in Houston just expanded his seafood distribution business that has been booming the past few springs.

I feel for him. shite sucks

This is only one part of the equation though. What price is he getting for them?

Lots of farmers are hurting this year. With that said they will get compensated from the government. I’m not gonna feel sorry for them. Lol

With closure to dine-in service, it is reported that farmers can only sell 10 to 15 percent of what they catch. And with the elimination of Mexican seasonal workers, peeling operations have been curtailed

Anyone who believes that 85-90% of what a farmer catches goes to dine in restaurants is stoopid. The biggest sellers of boiled crawfish is take out places, by far.

Not the guy I use if anything his business is better than ever, if that’s possible. Example: last Saturday morning he sold 168 sacks. In the morning. This weekend was even more

I bet he got put on a sack count at least 2 days this week and the price dropped $ .75 and is the lowest it been during lent in a very long time.
Is he going broke? No but he’s not doing nearly as well as he would have with no coronavirus

It’s his own crawfish. His price has dropped along with his competitors $1. Of course he isn’t making as much as he could be but to say he isn’t doing a great because of the virus just doesn’t compute. But from what I see he works on volume

I remember 10 years ago buying select grade on Good Friday for $2.50.

What? We’re getting $1 for large and $0.50 for anything that’s field run/medium

The amount the wholesalers are buying is down and they’re super selective since COVID19.

Losing half or more of your gross revenue kind of hurts my man.
