Idk if I had to guess it's to protect a certain sex and/or size range that's normally caught during the time period.
Or this time period is more crucial for sex and/or size class survival.
That's from a biological perspective.
Of course conservation isn't a biological consideration most of the time and is a by product of conservation and politics so the answer is probably somewhere in between

I've seen the rakes in action. They barely have to slow down to retrieve them with the rakes.

Thanks. Some good data. I noticed prices have definitely gone up over the years.
I wonder how the demand on crabs has changed since the 80-90's. I know a lot of them go up the east coast now and have for years. I'm not sure if it was like that 20-30 years ago.

I'm aware of that. I just wonder if the demand has increased up there in the last 20-30 years for our #1's.
I know when I owned a seafood market years ago, it was hard to get #1's because of this issue. And the prices had really went up on crabs in general over the years.
