Classic Memphis BBQ: What Wood Do They Use?

I love the Memphis style and the smoker just arrived.
Is there a consensus on what wood they use to get that unique flavor? Thanks.

I think hickory is used quite a bit. If you're talking Memphis BBQ then it's pork and fruit woods go really well too (cherry/apple).
And leave the sauce on the side.... never sauce another man's meat. :)

You can get a gallon of the Memphis Corky's BBQ Sauce at Sam's for $8.00. Too thick & sweet for me straight so I mix it 50/50 with Dreamland BBQ Sauce.

Not sure if Memphis folks adhere to a particular wood. I almost always use some hickory, and I like to add cherry, apple, and pecan to smokes. Peach and oak get in there too sometimes. Cherry seems to give a good rich color to meat.
Meathead claims that the type of hardwood makes little difference, and where a tree is grown can affect flavor as much or more than its species. LINK
