I'd love to visit Vietnam and/or Thailand because I love those cuisines, but to be honest, I'm scared. At 6'3" I'd stick out like a sore thumb.

Were you able to keep a straight face when she asked you for 30,000 dongs? I fear I would have snickered.

Not sure why they don't open at lunch.

It coincides with their nap time.

Great pictures. Brings back memories of my visits to Vietnam. Seems like you ate a lot of pho while you were there! I was a slave for banh mi made from baguettes straight out the oven. No meals of Nem Nuong in Nha Trang or Mi Quang in Da Nang? If I remember correctly, those dishes are known in that region?

I'd passed on their tea using a communal cup and opt for a soda served in a plastic bag and straw from a nearby vendor.

Nha Trang

My parents grew up there and glad I was able to visit it before the tourist boom when I was younger. Even though the government is shitty, its hard to leave a beautiful city you call home into the unknown.

Go to the market, that's a fun trip

It's not. I think they are renovating it. The infrastructure doesn't allow easy flowing of pedestrians and scooters.

There was one to go place for me to get banh mi. I'm not sure if it's the best banh mi ever but it's the best I've ever had(I've had my fair share of banh mi). I'll take it against any in a sandwich completion. It's that good. Not sure how many I ate. I stopped counting after 15. Only 40 cents each.

Keeping the bread toasty the old fashioned way.

The difference maker...mince meatball sauce + 2 other unknown sauces

Finished product, the perfect balance of sweet, salty, spicy.

Fried sticky rice. These were 25 cent each.

He's stuffing the sticky rice with minced meat.

Finished product. It takes like a super crispy meat pie.

Sticky rice. 30 cents.

Finished product. Yes, those are tiny dried fish. I was suspicious at first but they go well with the rice. They have a texture of beef jerky, sweet, salty, spicy. I prefer it over the sautéed pork.

Here's a different item you can get at the same vendor. White corn, shredded coconut, bean paste, salt, sugar, peanuts.

Another item but instead of white corn, it's sticky rice. These are eaten mostly as breakfast items.

Street BBQ

Pick what you want and they'll grill it for you. I think I picked one of each.

The whole family gets involved.

chicken gizzards, pork intestine, pork, wild boar

chicken feet, octopus, quail, more pork

Mi Quang

Ask an you shall receive.

This is Mi Quang at a market in HCMC. Sorry this pic is not too good. But as you see, the noodles are flat, thick, yellow. It has a bunch of items... pork, quail egg, shrimp, crispy rice paper. Not too much broth like pho...maybe half a ladle's. Sauce is pork based sweet and thick.

This is Hoi An's version. They use white noodles, but I like this one better.

HCMC Mi Quang was $1.30, Hoi An's was a little bit cheaper.

Cau Lao. I was told that only this item was originated and a specialty of Hoi An because of the uniqued well water needed to make the noodle.

The noodle is similar to chewy udon noodle. With pork, local greens, and a sweet and thick pork broth.
