Hey y’all, I want to get your opinion on cast iron vs stainless steel grates for charcoal grills. Have any of you made the switch to cast iron, or porcelain coated cast iron? What are the pros/cons that you’ve experienced? Thank you!

In my opinion, if you're going to upgrade the grate on your kettle. Go with something a little lower maintenance, that won't rust.
Stainless steel all the way. Alot easier to clean than cast iron and alot easier to take care of.
I find cast iron performs better on gas and it's easier to keep clean on a gas grill.

Oh and another thing.
I just saw the porcelain coated portion of your post. Yeah that's better than non coated cast iron but it will come off over time with cleaning. It only takes a couple of years for that to happen.
For charcoal grills I just think a stainless steel upgrade is better than cast iron.

Tried them. Didn’t care for them. Did what they were supposed to do but high maintenance. Went back to the standard stainless steel with lift up sections.

Can you close the lid with it fully vertically extended?

If you want to sear and get grill marks, cast iron is the one and only way to do it right. End of story.
They can rust and are harder to take care of sure, but I've had cast iron on my Egg for over 8 years and its still great. You could always store it inside or something. Even in your garage. Out of the elements is best if possible. But a grill cover and kept inside of your grill is pretty good.
This is the best thing to do, after you cook with it then get your grill back very hot. Burn everything off that you can, then brush it/ clean it, then take some cooking oil and rub it with oil for storage.
Cast iron is also great for Pizzas. Oil it up and it gives a great crust.
