They've always contended the original BBQ shrimp recipe called for margarine, not butter. Im guessing the margarine is why it's never as dark or viscous as some of the more modern takes on the dish. This is how they've always served them

I'm more concerned with the BBQ shrimp sandwich which I'm assuming will taste on par with the BBQ non-sammich dish.

In the plated dish the shrimp are still in the shells, for the sandwich the shrimp are peeled. Same sauce/seasonings.
I will say that a round or two of raw oysters followed by the BBQ Shrimp sandwich is one of of my favorite lunches in that part of town.

Those pics look much better than what I had. The shrimp were basically in clean oil. It was bizarre. I've had BBQ shrimp there more times than I can count and loved them every time but the last time.

I remember the first time I had their BBQ shrimp sandwich- I still think that was one of the best tasting things I've ever had.

You should go to satisfy your memory.

Listen I am not a food snob by any means of the imagination. I'm usually content with anything and am normally just happy to be out eating at a restaurant. But I went to Cafe Atchafalaya for brunch on Sunday and it absolutely sucked. First off, the band didn't even play jazz and they played only in the bar area for maybe 15 minutes while I was there.
Most importantly, the food sucked. My girlfriend had the Eggs Atchafalaya. It was bland, and worst of all the crab was full of shells. The manager took it back and took it off our bill. I had the Duck Hash and, honestly, it was unremarkable. It was pretty mediocre and did not have that much duck. The only thing good that stood out was the eggs were nicely poached. We had cornbread and boudin on the side. Boudin was ok. Cornbread was pretty pointless and bland as well. Blood Mary bar was weird as well. I felt like this was some Brooklyn-inspired establishment catering to quasi-hipster yelp reviewers.
I did not see any of the redeeming qualities that were so heralded on the internet. I'm pissed I took a cab uptown on my last day to go htere.
Also, Jacques Imo's sucked as well which I wrote about in my other thread.
"Jacques Imo's sucked. Alligator cheesecake and boudin balls lacked flavor and were basically just fried-cheesiness akin to something you'd get at TGIFridays. The gumbo was bland. The fried chicken was pretty good. Redfish was cold. The sides were unremarkable and they gave very scant portions. It was a huge letdown and I'm an idiot for choosing this place. I was embarrassed. I should have known better."
On Saturday we rode bikes uptown and hit up Frankie and Johnny's and Parasol's.
Frankie and Johnny's wasn't good. Their crawfish were dirty and hard.
Parasol's was awesome. Firecracker shrimp poboy and fries with debris were great. It was an awesome place to grab a mid-day sandwich.
Went to Mandina's for Friday lunch and Sunday dinner (went tried and true Sunday night after my Atchafalaya and Jacques Imo's fiascos). Mandinda's is great. GF got the BBQ shrimp special on Friday lunch and really enjoyed it. I got the roast beef po boy which is always awesome. On Sunday she got the spaghetti and meatballs which she loved. Their red gravy is a bit too sweet for me. I got another roast beef po boy as it will be a while until I get another one. Fried onion rings and shrimp remoulade rock as well.
I went to Commander's for a bday party Saturday night. Their fried oyster hors d'oeuvres were amazing, but were probably surpassed by the oysters mentioned in my next paragraph. I'm not a big beef guy, but their beef tournedos was probably some of the best beef I've eaten because of the crusted pepper.
Honestly, the best food we had probably the entire weekend was outside of Bullet's Sports Bar in the 7th ward on Thursday night when we saw Kermit Ruffins. Bentley's food truck outside served us a fried seafood platter and shrimp creole which were out of this world. It was perfect. The fried shrimp were perfect and fried oyters were huge and took about three bites per oyster. God bless Bentley. The setting, music, and food made that night unforgettable.
I'm really pissed at some of my decisions. Feel like I failed. Thank God for Bullet's Sports Bar.
Oh yeah- the snack mix at Carousel Bar is amazing.

If you've never tried Lil Dizzys it's worth trying

Also had a good lunch at Morton's in Madisonville on Thursday. Their boiled seafood was really good in my relatively inexperienced opinion.

What possessed you to go to Frankie and Johnny's?
that place has been terrible

Haha well shite. I went there cause my grandpa took me there probably about 16 years ago to show me where he'd go sometimes when he'd get off of work on the river decades ago. It was a nostalgic thing.
