: Brennan's

The only thing that Brennan's does really well(besides turtle soup) is small 8-12 person parties in their private rooms. That is it. Biggest ripoff in NO. The only reason it even stays open is because of concierge referrals to clueless tourists.

Some years ago, I believe Tom Fitz wrote about asking for the "local" menu, upon arrival. I believe he said Brennan's had a menu for locals with local prices and one for tourists, which was more expensive. Anyone have a memory of that?

I'm sorry I couldn't get to this thread fast enough. Brennan's is the biggest tourist trap in this city. On top of that, its probably the most expensive restaurant in the city. It doesn't even come close to making the top 100 restaurants in the city. In fact, I’m not sure it makes the top 250.
I know that doesn't make you feel much better or put money back in your pocket, but hopefully this thread keeps someone else from making the decision to go there. I wouldn't even go there if someone else was paying, that is no lie.

I found it. In his review of the restaurant, Fitz says to make sure they know you're local as there is an attractively priced lunch menu on weekdays for locals. Wonder if there's a dinner menu, as well, that we don't know about...

No.

Wouldn't that be illegal? Doesn't matter. I will never step foot in that place again.

Something like this would strike me as even more tawdry than a place just being an unabashed tourist trap and nothing else.

If that is true, thats one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard…the thought of a private local menu really makes me hate this place.

It is probably just a joke they play on Tom to make him feel special and see if he will report about it.

He wrote it up in his review on nomenu.com. Whether it's still in place in view of the economy, I don't know, but it's still in his report. It's also still rated 4 stars, which based on what others report, cannot possibly be accurate.

I also recall that K-Paul's has an unlisted (or so I was told) number for certain locals to call for reservations. I don't know that the prices are different, but there's likely a preference for reservations. I think that's what I was told. A frequent diner there, gave it to me several years ago. I used it about a year ago, but it took about 3 days for that phone to be answered. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some other "behind the scenes local stuff" going on in other restaurants.

Long running joke, if that's the case, because I recall reading it several years before Katrina.

I'm ok with special treatment for locals/regulars at restaurants but a complete separate menu is a little much..and if it involves Brennan's then its even worse. Fitz will acknowledge that Brennan's is overpriced, but to continue to give it 4 stars and not address how terrible the place is shows his lack of objectivity.

He hasn't revised the review since Dec 2008, which will be his defense to the aged recommendation. He will say he can't possibly keep them all updated and I don't believe he updates based on one meal. He claims he eats at a place 3 times before rating, for the most part. I don't know if that's what he does to re-rate a restaurant.

Brennan's is clearly not a 4 star restaurant, at this time, based on what most folks are saying. I can't speak, personally, because I wouldn't waste my time, going there, unless I had to go with someone else. I know someone who went there in the past 8 months or so and found it to be just okay and nothing more.

One of the best meals I have ever had at any restaurant occured at Brennan's but that was like 10 years ago. Havent been back since due to then not possibly repeating. Id rather just remember the place being good.

It was dinner. Treated my mom to dinner there as a mother's day thing after I got my first 'real' job. So the experience may be a little biased too.

Side note: Wife and I did le crepe nanou a couple weekends ago. Wow that was good. Spinach and crab crepe and the veal dish were excellent.

I had a gift certificate from a client and went for the revillion dinner in December and its easily in my top 3 worst restaurant experiences.
I did have a decent meal there about 10 years ago.

Chef Michael Roussel did die in 2005 after retiring. Sounds like the new chef isnt working out too well.

It resembled banquet food.…open-a-bag/match-a-photo chain food. The atmosphere felt like Mulate's, not a well known New Orleans creole-french restaurant. On top of that, the service was the worst part. I felt robbed for the small amount I had to pay on top of the gift certificate.
I wish I had something positive.
