with blackberries stacking up in the icebox, i decided to make dumplins for the first time. nothing to compare too, but not bad. i have room for improvement. haven't had that since i was a kid. another thing off my bucket list. recipe i found on the net uses yellow cake batter with flour.

we just cook the berries down in sugar and water the run thru a strainer to keep the flesh but eleminate the seeds, make roll out dumplings just like for chick and dumplings, cut, drop in boiling juice till done, top with ice cream or cold heavy cream.

God, one of the things that I truly missed. Spending summers at my Grandparents in Pilottown and Blackberry dumplings.

Good times!

They were river pilots? The frikkin Judge Perez almost ran me over a few weeks back when I was running to Port Eads.

I haven't looked for blackberries yet. I always started around late June. Guess I'll keep an eye open. Last year I stopped on Nicholson extension just past the parish line and picked a paper sack full on the barb wire fence on the side of the road. Took me about thirty minutes and I was sweating like a government mule. Made a good cobbler but I think I'll try the dumplings this year.

Bar Pilots! Judge Perez only runs about 20-25 knots, but throws one heck of a swell.

Never heard of them being called "dumplins" - is that the same as cobbler? if not, what is the diff?

dumplins are like little biscuits or muffins in the slurry. isn't cobler like a pie?
