ok. there's a guy on there that's from p'ville and thought it might be you since you were talkin it up.
have you seen a grill dome? apparently there are no real distributors and everything is by mail order.
on their forum they have a list of people that volunteer to show you their GD and this fireguy offers his for show.
also, when all is said and done, right at the same price as the BGE (GD + shipping = +- = BGE + tax at local place)

I plan on going check a BGE out in person this weekend. I remember seeing one a few years back, but I was not in the market for it, and could not have afforded it at the time.
FWIW, talking with my dad yesterday. My grandfather had a BGE that lasted decades and was handed down to my parents before I was born. They eventually wore the grill out of it and ended up getting rid of the entire thing. I've also heard the early ones used a simple clay instead of a ceramic made to take the heat and abuse. But it sounds like even the old one lasted forever.

I was talking to a friend that has one and per him
“be sure to consider the cost of installing cable and a TV outside if you purchase a BGE because you’re going to be cooking out there so much with this thing”
I see this as a sunk cost as it will be the same whichever grill I choose… HA
The thing with the GD is that there’s virtually no local customer support. Now, I’m not saying I’ll need it but the only physical place they have is in Ga. I posted this on their website last night asking for a few answers:

quote:
will be in the market in the next few months and just have a few q's...
1) what is the actual grill made of?
2) is there anywhere to buy one of these units (or at least check out) in the new orleans/baton rouge area?
3) if no to #2, how much is shipping?
4) i will likely build a table to hold my grill. are there any special precautions, with regards to temperature, that should be taken around the outside (at table top) and bottom (where the unit sits)?
5) in the "highly recommended accessories" section, there's a metal top. what's the difference between this top and the top that comes with the grill?
6) is there some sort of apparatus that can be installed inside for "low & slow" cookin? if not, how is indirect cooking achieved?
7) can someone email me a bunch of pictures of the unit decked out/in use/multiple grill levels being used? i can't find many on the main website and it's saying i'm not allowed to download/view them from this message board. coon150@yahoo.com
thanks and GEAUX TIGERS

All great questions. Keep us posted on the answers. Looking at their (GD) forum, the stories dealing with the customer service seem great.
I really like the fact that they use stainless steel as opposed to powder coated steel. I think those rust prone parts would be the week link in the long run. I'm about to throw away a decent pit/smoker that has rusted away in our swamp like weather.

I’m trying to compile all the info on GD, BGE, and BK all together and make a chart (total price with all accessories being equal, materials, etc…). I’ll post on here when I’m done… let me know if there’s anything else you want me to add…
Also, I really like this table and would probably build one similar out of cypress…

Coon, your friend is correct about installing a TV outisde b/c I basically cook on my Large BGE 3-4 nights a week. It does cost but it will last a very long time and pay for itself. The guy who posted that the Bubba Keg is Stainless Steel that is not true.
Anyway here is the table project that is almost complete, since this picture was taken Stainless Doors have been added and a drawer below the egg is being completed. It's made out of Cedar, couldn't get my hands on any Cypress

this is a pretty nice setup for the BGE without going custom...we sell em at my parents store. holds and umbrella on the other side and its not too heavy either, two people can carry it.
also have this cart and a couple other different ones too:
and, FWIW...that cart that was posted earlier with the grill dome in it can be used for the big green egg...in fact, it was probably made for the BGE originally. the GD and BGE appear to be the exact same size.

My wife and I are in love with that Kamado Joe purple and gold smoker. I am trying to convince her to get it for christmas, too. I'll get back with you soon for info.

no choice made. i still have some stuff to get finished in the back yard before i pull the trigger. probably in a month or two...

The BGE cooks great and so does the Bubby Keg but one is Green the other silver. What any good tiger fan needs if they are a fan of Kamado style cooking is a Purple and Gold kamado Joe. a little more than the Bubba and a little less than the BGE cooks as good as both but has Purple base & Gold top. Comes completely assembled. Nice shelves and cart. They just now became available in South Louisiana. I puchased one 2 weeks ago for $829 including cart, shelves and an poker/ash tool. I saw a picture of one someone posted on the site. I'm new so I'm not sure how to post a picture.
