I haven't been to Short Stop since I was a kid, but the roast beef po boy was my dad's favorite sandwich of all time.
I don't have any ill memories of it.

I have been wanting to try it, but I can't pull myself away from the California Connection.

there are just too many damn sandwiches to be had at CM
Yes, I haven't had one that I don't like. I'm a big fan of getting the 6" sandwiches and making multiple meals out of them. Can't beat $8-9 for essentially 2 or 3 delicious sandwiches.

Other than a few I make at home, a few of my favorites are The Gambino at Butcher and the muff at R&O's.

Either the Delta Trio or grilled snapper poboy from Craig's, Petersville, AL. Unfortunately he has been out of business for about ten years. I used to drive nearly an hour round trip a cpl times a week to eat there.
Now my favorite local is the Spiced Chicken from Frank's Italian, Sheffield, AL. Chicken breast strips seasoned with a special honey dijon, sauteed onions and peppers, topped with melted cheddar on Italian bread.
The Hot Italian from Pizza Chef in Florence would be second, best bread by far though.
I also stumbled upon this deli in DC many years ago that had the best Reuben I've ever had. I ate lunch there everyday I was in town. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember the name if my life depended on it.
The smoked turkey from Moe's in Orange Beach is one I crave too.
It's hard to find a *great* sandwich around here nowadays. A million restaurants in this area and only a handful of sandwiches that are better quality than subway or quiznos.

I must say that when I finally got around to trying that famed chicken salad, I was underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it was good and I'd buy it again, but with all I had heard about it I expected much more.

Honestly, I am shocked no one has mentioned this sandwich yet...one of the more overrated sandwiches I have had. The Chelsea's grilled cheese. Don't get me wrong, it is good, but come on...it was no where near as good as the LSU crowd hypes it out to be.

I hear they're looking into a Lafayette location. As soon as it opens you'll be singing its praises just behind the Popeye's buffet

BRIE CHEESE SANDWICH ON FRENCH BREAD FROM THE FRENCH HOUSE IN HOUSTON

Posted on 6/13/12 at 12:14 pm to CAD703X
Is that on Westheimer? I remember going to a place on Westheimer that had really good French pastries. The only comparable place in Louisiana that I've found is Maurice's, although I know there's a place on Magazine I need to try (forget what it's called).
Baum's is meh for french stuff. Whole Foods actually makes a good Napoleon, but it's small and expensive.
Sorry for the momentary threadjack. To stay on topic, I'm adding a vote for Darrell's. Had lots of good deli sandwiches in NYC too, I just can't recall what they were exactly...but they were good.

1) Grilled Grouper (lots of restaurants on the Gulf Coast in FL serve'em)
2) Shrimp or Catfish po-boy at Captain Humbles (Slidel pre-Katrina).
3) Grilled yellow-fin with white remoulade at Southside Cafe (Slidell)

How long ago was that picture taken? I've never had the grilled cheese look like that at Chelsea's

I'm not really understanding the AM Mart ones. I must be getting the wrong thing or something (Cajun Turkey). It's deli meat on store bought bread with regular out-of-your-fridge condiments. I don't understand.

It's nostalgia. I ate that at least once a week for almost 3 years. Now when I make it back there, I get the warm n fuzzies.
