If all you want to do is make a basic roast:

2-5 lb CHUCK roast
Brown it until you think you have almost burned it
Put it in a crockpot and add 1 pack of lipton onion soup mix, 1 pack of ranch dressing mix, 2-3 links of smoked sausage, and 4-7 pepperocinni peppers and a little juice. Let that crap sit for about 6 hours and then thicken with two teaspoons of cornstarch that you have premixed with a little water.

The two most important parts of this are the chuck roast (it needs to be chuck) and the smoked sausage. It is what gives a big piece of the gravy its flavor.

My mom makes a badass chuck roast with nothing but Lipton onion soup mix.

Put the roast in foil, sprinkle soup mix on top. Pour 1/2 cup water over roast and then seal the foil up. Put in the oven on 250 for 6 hours.

Guaranteed to please. She would usually scoop out some of the juice to cook her rice with instead of plain water. Gives the rice a nice flavor.

We usually do onion soup mix and a couple cans of cream of mushroom.
