I haven't been to Vera's since Katrina and I am scared it won't be the same. It was a top three for a seafood fried shack before. I loved Vera's.
Great and I mean great onion rings and maybe the best fried shrimp I have ever had. Also, their stuffed crab was GREAT.

Besh is from Slidell.

I never understood why Mandeville/Covington always gets all the attention over Slidell in this area. Seems like Slidell should be performing just as well.

Thanks for the list.

Slidell is more of a blue collar town, Mandeville/Covington is more white collar... I think that has something to do with why Slidell has some great casual restaurants.. and Mandeville has more finer dining..

they're doing some great chargrilled oysters right now too.. and they're grilling 'em behind the bar... it's a cool scene while enjoying a brew and BSn' with the tail at the bar..

and the best shrimp po boy on the northshore, period.

My only complaint is that they ain't got any draft beer..

Makes sense. Although, I think that there is something to be said for casual dining of the South Louisiana variety, especially when you add in seafood and po boys. You just can't get that anywhere else in the country. People in Louisiana see it as commonplace, but there is something to be said for those who are able to perfect the genre and go beyond just throwing some fried shrimp on some french bread with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. When you can find casual dining that goes beyond the basics while building upon the overall style of food, you've really got something special that can match up with what is offered in the finer restaurants, in my opinion.

Agree with the majority in this thread...

Nathans for finer dining.

Southside, Phil's Marina Cafe for casual/lunch.

What'd yall think of La Rosetta's? I was only able to get there once after they re-opened in their old place after Mandinas failed. It was a very good experience. They're closed again and I heard there's a drug store that bought up that whole corner and plans to open.

Yeah, CVS bought that whole corner where pecks seafood used to be until they moved down the street and there was another place in between rosetta's and the old pecks but I forgot what it was. They are tearing all those down soon to put a big CVS right there.

Now that I've moved back down to south LA and I visit my parents in Slidell, I feel like the food in Slidell isn't what is used to be.
