Salt Lick in driftwood is WAY overrated
There are WAY better BBQ places around Austin and within 30-45 minutes of Austin
I think Salt Lick gets too much hate on here. Yes, Austin now has many bbq places with better food overall. But Salt Lick is still a fun experience. The atmosphere is great, the place is cool, order as much food as you want when doing family style...it's great. I don't go there expecting to be blown away by their brisket.
Their ribs are very good.
That being said, It's perplexing that someone would recommend Salt Lick when the request was for a "nice dinner in Austin."

Wouldn’t classify as a “nice dinner” place, but I do love Home Slice pizza

Some good recs so far in here. I’d say:
Emmer & Rye
Olamei
Uchi
Odd Duck
DipDipDip Tatsu Ya
Comedore
Wu Chow
The Peached Tortilla
Jeffreys
Contigo
Neighborhood Sushi
I’ll add that most “fancy” places in Austin can be as casual as you want them to be. There aren’t many places you’ll see mostly men in suits.

I get both the love and hate for this place. I will say I think the assertion that their food is mediocre is off base. It’s good food.
I live in South Austin and go once every 3 months or so. I’ve been around 8 times and only once has the food been less than stellar (and it was taken to go and just felt like it had been sitting out a bit). It also has the kind of atmosphere most people want when they think Tex-Mex.
The margaritas do suck and the wait times can be long. I wouldn’t go out of my way to hit this spot if I was visiting, but it’s earned it’s place as an Austin institution.

Exactly. It does not suck. And I've been going since I was a wee lad in the late 80's.
But it's not just nostalgia, it is still good (although it may not impress visitors)

It's similar to what I said about Salt Lick. Matt's is very good for standard Tex Mex.
But yeah, I wouldn't tell a visitor to go there. I'd say go to some where like Curra's, Polvos, or Lichas cantina for some good interior Mexican food that you can't get easily in other places.
